Also, @Fed up: Cool it.
1. I didn't have Google Earth on my computer either and I used Google Maps.
2. See above.
3. I honestly can't say anything about this one. It took me almost 15 minutes to look up all the locations, and I'm on 10Mbps cable.
4. Yep, you're right on that one.
5. Yes, it did give an incorrect formula at the beginning. M and co. noticed and corrected it.
6. That's part of the puzzle.
7. Wikipedia doesn't. For these puzzles, Wikipedia is usually where you want to look up things first.
8. No, it doesn't. When I input the correct coords into Google Maps, it put me near a rather famous square in the correct city (which, just to be clear, IS NOT Cancun. The correct city is somewhere in Eurasia.)

This isn't a competition about Wikipedia, so requiring solvers to rely on Wikipedia as the sole source of information would be awful puzzle design. And even wikipedia says "... levels for visitors", implying that there are more levels that are closed to visitors.

Geocaching
What's wrong with a scavenger hunt?

I prefer variety. So what if there wasn't a more "mental" aspect to this puzzle. Sometimes a foot race is fun! And I'd never used Google Earth before and found it fascinating.

So while I appreciate everyone's frustration and eye-rolling...I'm fine with it!

not that anyone cares about my opinion.

Deep breath.

The amount of vitriol here astounds even me. True, there was one factual mistake, with B. Yeah, it was less of a puzzle and more busywork. And... those are the only things I can really see wrong.

No one had to install Google Earth. I didn't. I converted the coordinates to decimals and plugged them into Maps, then looked up information about the buildings. Though, in some cases I was able to count the asked-for item from the overhead view. If your hate is Google-directed, there's Yahoo, Bing, even goddamned Rand McNally, and for the purposes of this they work just as well.

Just... what the hell, people. Chill out.

Really. I think it's evident that M puts a lot of effort into his website and into providing a wide variety of FREE puzzles on a weekly basis. I applaud him for coming up with something different every seven days. You know they can't all be gems, but there's usually enough there for a few minutes to a few hours of diversion every Wednesday/Thursday.

True, there should have been more beta testing on the week's puzzle, but it's getable. And while I agree there wasn't much of a payoff to this one, I still had a decent time solving it.

Two of the reasons why Google Earth would suddenly flip you to Cancun were:

Using a "non-standard" notation. The system that was intended to be used left all degrees of precision in the seconds portion of longitude and latitude. This meant that entering a fraction or a floating point for the minutes in the second part would lead you to Cancun.

Also, not placing a space between the " symbol and the E would sometimes throw it for loops. I know I was sent to Cancun several times, the Adriatic sea others, etc., until I finally realized that just maybe some of the values weren't what I thought.

Was it fair to rely on Google Earth? That's a moot question. It was M (or the group of people behind it)'s choice to use it, and reading the email update or following any of the flavortext links would have led you to "I mean for you to use this to solve this problem." Whether you like Google Earth or hate it, the company, and feel a need to vomit every time you see a +1 icon, it's what the puzzle maker chose. His site, his effort, his answers. And since this was a "virtual" tour of interesting UN heritage sites, using the 3D models in GEarth ("party on, Wayne") kinda made sense, even if it flew in the face of what Wikipedia said.

End of attempt at rationalization. Smile

Nope, no matter what I try, still getting Cancun. No idea what I'm doing wrong now. 100% my bad, though, no hate for the site or anything, I just suck.

EDIT: Oh, okay, got it now based on another post in this thread (and some flat-out guessing).
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'd point out that it's not in Eurasia, but more to the west.

Please, instead of so much criticism we should all support these two sites--"Unfiction" and "TMT" which give us much pleasure mostly. Of the critics-just remember when you point the finger there are three pointing back at you.......Be respectful of all these peoples' efforts. Thank you.

up with people

I support Prudence agreeing with Nonny, much like how I supported Stephen Colbert affirming Tim Pawlenty standing with Scott Walker. Who's with me?!?
