I don't buy that a camera inhibits the Operator. Yes, we have many examples of him moving super slow when a camera is around. But we've also got plenty of examples of him teleporting around whenever he wants--the most recent entry showed this. Also, if Alex is under the Operator's influence(which I think is safe to assume at this point), why would he bring a camera around?
The obvious reason that everyone is taking cameras around is to help with that whole memory loss thing. But there IS some greater connection to cameras--recall the moment when he shows up in Alex's apartment after Amy pulls out the old camera. The thing is, to me that suggests the camera may in fact HELP the Operator.

It would sort of act as a catch-22, I think. That you need a camera to remember everything, but having a camera around actually benefits TO. And if TO wanted cameras around, it would explain why filming yourself becomes this sort of compulsion. Like maybe it's just another symptom of slendersickness.

Why? Its kinda putting two and two together. Slendy seems to have left Alex alone between the time he gave up on his movie and Entry 26. Slendy didn't go after him and his lady/sister/whatever-she-is again until she turned the camera on.
Its strange. It seems like Slendy was almost summoned by the people with cameras. But its more than that; he doesn't fuck with everyone who owns a camera. Maybe he only wants to fuck with the people who own the cameras who have captured him on footage/have recorded in his resting area, and wants to troll them into never using their camera/looking at the footage again.
But, here's my theory on the thing; Slendy can only be discovered via a video camera but afterward a person discovers his existence, he may be seen with the naked eye. And once discovered, once he senses that someone is aware of his presence, he vehemently tries to make them ignore him, even if it requires using other people who have discovered him (Tim) as pawns to harass the discovering party into just letting Slendy go.

Right, so maybe it's possible Alex saw the footage of himself at his birthday and was therefore able to notice TO when he was walking Rocky?

Yeah, pretty much. Maybe later on, Alex will talk about how he kept seeing the same slender fellow throughout his childhood and adolescence, and eventually pulled everyone involved with the filming into the whole stalker/stalkee relationship. I only assume that everyone got pulled into it upon viewing some Marble Hornets footage that was tainted.
I could, however, be completely wrong and as far from the truth as humanly possible.

Given the huge amount of distortion on the operator-summoning camera that Amy uses, is it possible that the Operator somehow "imprints" himself on electronics if they are exposed to him for long enough?

Also, why was Alex keeping his camera at Amy's place to begin with?

If you like the Alex is TTA theory (not so strong anymore), then that's why. Otherwise, he didn't keep his old camera. Someone brought it back into his life, probably TTA himself.
There's more theories, of course.

I personally dont think there's any real link between TO and cameras. I belive that he is drawn to Alex and those who get in his way. I think Alex was just filming himself to confirm to himself that he's not going crazy (same goes for Jay). I know that TO affects the cameras but who's to say that he does'nt do that to all electronics. Also just my oppinion can't proove this but I dought that Alex and Jay look exclusively through their camera screens (Plus to that effect Alex has seen TO with his eyes while using the chest cam because it has no screen) also everyone saw him in the entry where he was just standing off in the background while they were trying shoot a scean. (dont remember the entry its the one where alex just yells at him). I can neither proove or disproove these there just my oppinion.

Could have Slenderman put his camera there.

Who is Slenderman? It's the Operator for Marble Hornets.

It's not that far fetched an idea that The Operator is somehow affected by cameras.
There's a whole branch of physics more or less based on the idea that by observing things, we change them. If it works for quarks, why doesn't it work for The Operator?

Here's what I think:
Slendy is able, via some sort of trick of psychology, make it so people don't notice he's there, unless he wants them to. This trick is probably very subtle. Now, a camera such as those used in MH would be at a much lower resolution than the human eye, and as such, my not pick up on this subtle masking, making Slendy visible through the camera. Once you see him there, you are paying attention, looking for him off camera. You can't hide in plain sight if you are being looked for, so Slendy is seen off camera.
That, or it's a paranormal series, and things like this don't need an explanation.
