I think it's a substitution cipher too. I'm going to say maybe a Vignere. I would wager to say that we need to find the title to a book to use as the passphrase to solve the cipher.

Nice, Viginere sounds like a plan. 22 lines of text, so maybe a 22 letter novel name?

Edit (off topic) LOL, just had the thought, War and Peace is too small! Laughing

Could be. I was also thinking about the document he sent about the Thirteen Treasures of the Island of Britain, Tri Thlws ar Ddeg Ynys Prydain. We have the gate to the British Library. Maybe it has to do with the ISBN number for the book or something in the library...

Hmm, could be too deep? The last solve (and I am in no way dissing it, it was a very cool solve!) was simpler (sp?) than we had been looking at ( for we read "I"!) so |I wonder if we overcomplicate things sometimes. Gah, I'm kernickered, literally spent most of my day off on this so I'm gonna go. Will be busy tomorrow so I'll have another look on Sunday ( though I'm sure some clever bod will have solved it by then Laughing

Look at the last one... perhaps that is required?
Or perhaps it is nothing, still I thought it best to point it out.

That is a fantastic find. You have the same picture used by Vlad in his new puzzle. You also have a reference to Alice's Adventures Under Ground. Both very interesting things.

I think it's interesting what is going on in that picture for the new test. You have a cipher that is backwards. You have the gate and it's shadow on the wall which reverses the words on the gate. You have one side of the puzzle that is light and the other that is dark. A lot of duality in that.

Duality, that could be it! 22 letter book title, could it be:

Through the Looking Glass?

I have to go out now, but I'll be back later on Wink

There's also a reference to binary in the duality of light and shadow. But, if we seek not a book, perhaps a character?

New email from VS

Quote:
Yes, I'm writing to you.

You haven't spoken to me by my correct title yet so I imagine you've fallen for the very obvious red herring of book titles - no?

Nothing to do with books at all.

Admittedly, the Library image has been played around with, rotated, reflected et. but for what? Mmmm? To confuse.

And its worked. I can see why my counterpart has reservations about you. You do need help...

Pity I'm not going to give any...

Partial decode
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Based on the bolded letters I did a ROT13 on the code and what we have is a message with all of the vowels removed. The stars represent the vowels. Here's what I got:

th*r**s*d**pg*lfb*tw**nwh*t*m*n*s*ndwh*th*r*pr*s*ntsb*tw**nwh*t
h**s*s*n*nd*v*d**l*ndwh*th**s*s*c*ll*ct*v*b**ngh*sf*nct**n*s
d*v*l*p*d*tth**xp*ns**fth**nd*v*d**l*tysh**ldh**xc*lh**sm*r*ly
*d*nt*c*lw*thh*sc*ll*ct*v*f*nct**nb*tsh**ldh*n*tth*nth**ghh*m*yb*
h*ghly*st**m*d*s*f*nct**n*ns*c**tyh*s*nd*v*d**l*ty*swh*lly*nth*l*
v*l*fh*s*nf*r**r*nd*v*l*p*df*nct**ns*ndh**ss*mply*b*rb*r**nwh*l**n
th*f*rm*rc*s*h*h*sh*pp*lyd*c**v*dh*ms*lf*st*h*s*ct**lb*rb*r*sm

Just on a quick glance it looks like it might start with "there is a deep gulf between what..." Googling that phrase doesn't come back with anything.

I'm not sure if there's a pattern for placing the vowels or if it's just going to be trial and error on our part. I also am not sure what the do clue in his email is for.

EDIT: full decode
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There is a deep gulf between what a man is and what he represents, between what he is as an individual and what he is as a collective being. His function is developed at the expense of the individuality. Should he excel, he is merely identical with his collective function; but should he not, then, though he may be highly esteemed as a function in society, his individuality is wholly on the level of his inferior, undeveloped functions, and he is simply a barbarian, while in the former case he has happily deceived himself as to his actual barbarism.

This is a quote from Carl Jung about a psychological type called "the shadow". I replied to his email asking if his true title is "the shadow", but all I got was the auto-reply. So I posted on his Facebook account to see if i get a response.

First time actually trying my hand at puzzle-working ARG instead of lurking and commenting. I'll wait for the next puzzle and then try, if it's not too complicated. So, count me in. The Jung reference and other psych/mind references make me happy. I hope I'll be able to help with Psych stuff for this.

With a new profile picture, the file name would appear at first sight to be code:

Edit: The astrological symbols are Jupiter and Capricorn, which is odd because Capricorn is ruled by Saturn...

Sorry, double post. Just received an e-mail too:

Quote:
Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.

The dark side of your being, your sinister shadow...represents the true spirit of life as against the arid scholar.

In spite of its function as a reservoir for human darkness—or perhaps because of this—the shadow is the seat of creativity.

'Vladimir' has his secrets - as do you - the question is - how far are you willing to play???

Welcome to the dark side of the tasks:

The first shadow task {one not to be shared literally, but just to be recalled personally} is to recall your most darkest thought.

That time you genuinely wished someone dead, the time you did not care about the consequences of that bad action or that deepest moment of regret.

Now recreate it in some alternative means. Music. Art. Writing. Share with me.

I do not ask for details - they are irrelevant - but for you to play this 'game' of wills you have to fully access your full mind. The good and bad.

I am aware this will not be to everyone's liking. That is fine. Wait for when the lighter side regains his hold over this body...

Until then though, the shadow remains.

Vladimir's Shadow.

I think that's just the way that Facebook saves profile pictures. My profile picture's file name is 186397_100003043927664_434417052_n.jpg.

Composed a song today, sent it in to Vlad's Shadow. We'll see where that takes us...

Thank goodness, my brain is frazzled so could do with a night off codes!

Yeah, I fired off a poem too, I like this sharing/creating stuff, but have to admit I think I'd rather be creating on the lighter side Wink
