Operator not a physical entity?
SPEC

Hi, first post, so sorry if I'm not following conventions properly.

One thing I thought about while watching this series that I haven't seen mentioned is the idea that the Operator is some sort of non-corporeal entity. The only time anybody clearly sees it without a camera occurs early on in the filming of marble hornets when they mistake him for a guy in the park (I think). This would explain why the operator needs proxies like the masked guys. He can't directly effect anything, can only mess with/appear on video or influence people/ posses them.

For example, perhaps the video where Alex is bleeding is him realizing that he had been possessed and committed an act of violence.

And maybe Alex is trying to kill off everyone "tainted" by the operator, so they can't be used against him.

And maybe this is also the operator's plans, to have these kids wind up killing each other. Notice how all of the people involved seem to get increasingly paranoid and lie/neglect to share information with each other.

Well you mention people seeing him at the park, which is on film. Alex sees him when he's walking his dog. Since none of the characters are really looking at the footage while they're filming, you can tell by their reactions to Slendy appearing that they can see him without having to look into the camera for him if that's what you're implying.

IMO the paranoia/lying is human nature and has nothing to do with the operator. Alex lies to people to protect his own identity. Not necessarily that he wants to not get caught for killing people, but moreso to watch his back that he doesn't end up dead himself at the hands of someone like a masky. The operator just being some figure that posesses people and nothing more completely ruins the character for me.

All in all, this has been speculated before and didn't need it's own topic. I wish people would give substantial theories that were based on facts and not predictions when making an entire topic about them :\

But what about the slendy appearance in entry 51 where Alex fucks off? He's there, then the last frame shows him right in front of the camera, then he's gone and Brian is trying to find Alex seemingly not knowing what just happened.

The problem with fact vs theory right now is that the facts aren't concrete enough. Speculation on something like has to take thought and different people's views. By posting a theory like this on the forums, people can read and criticize it based on the holes in the their theories.

DaveK, can you clarify whether or not you feel the Operator is real? If you're trying to argue that the Operator is a creation of Jay, Alex's, or someone else's imagination, I will disagree with you. However, I am intrigued by the notion that there is no physical body to the Operator, but rather his appearance is an impression forced into the minds of the viewer by whatever-the-fuck-he-is.

Unfortunately, that last theory can't work on the sole merit that we (the audience) are seeing him in a recorded video... which isn't fooled by tricks of the mind. In order for digital film (or even analog film) to capture an image, there must be matter there for light to bounce off of into the lens -- or something that projects photons that are absorbed into the lens.

Well, the Operator does have some physical force. It apparently knocked over the camera during the blackout between Entry #40 and Entry #41.

It also pushed open Alex's door.

Just watching back the TTA videos which i do sometimes cause I enjoy them and I notice there are a lot of reference to water. Do you think there's something to that? This for example is from the Operator video.

Well here at least the weakness to water was not spur of the moment. Still, no just, no.

He was seen by a plane-full of people in TribeTwelve's 'Northern Trip,' but I guess that's unrelated. MH-wise, I don't believe anybody outside the cast of MH (and Amy) have seen him.

Well, and Jay. Unless you're counting him as part of the cast of MH.

At this point, there's no way to know for absolute certain how people see him when they're not looking through the viewfinder of a camera. Entry 12 seems to indicate that when they're not, he appears non-threatening. But we don't know how he looks in, say, Entry 46. Does Alex see him as Jay does, through the viewfinder? Does Jay even NEED the viewfinder to see how damn creepy he is? It's hard to know, at this point.
