Is Jay really such a derp?

Okay, I'm a little mystified: why do people think Jay is such a derp? If anything, I think he handles the situation quite well.

Some common complaints I've encountered:

Why did Jay go back to the house twice?! It was such a derp move! No, it wasn't. What other clues to Jay have and why wouldn't he go back? It's also important to remember that. Jay presumably has shown the footage to the police and they've more then likely dismissed it as a stunt or a joke. Also, it wasn't as if he didn't go there unprepared and I doubt he went unprepared for his return trips. That Jay would risk his life not once, but three times to find out what happened to Alex (and two of those knowing that some crazy psycho was there) (not to mention all the countless times since) just shows what a good person he is.

Jay's a terrible liar. Jay isn't Sherlock Holmes, he's everyman thrown into a terrible situation – and for some reason, he seems reluctant to bring others into it. In season one; Jay saw tapes of his friend (seemingly) being stalked by a supernatural entity. It takes awhile to process. Given that his friend was (seemingly) in danger, Jay would be desperate for answers and it's understandable that his interview with Tim was all over the place. He had no reason to suspect Tim at this point,

In season two, Jay's woke up with seven months of his life missing.. It's not something you deal with instantly, even in the time between entries, Jay would have. Yes, Jay made some terrible excuses, but they were understandable given where his head was at this point (and unlike Jessica, he wasn't an attractive girl seemingly being stalked by a guy with a camera and forced to assess the situation quickly). Even in season three, when Jay confronts Tim, he's desperate for answers and is meeting up with the one guy who might have all the answers, as well as the guy who saved his life after three months of trying to track him down and might be able to protect him from The Operator as well as Jay's guilt of getting Jessica involved and to him, probably killed. You've got to remember that apart from us, Jay has no-one. Aside from us, he doesn't have anyone else, and he was still processing that his (arguably best friend by his reaction) had killed someone and believes he was going to murder him along with other two other people and that Jay himself got someone else involved in this mess and presumably killed. Given that totheark monitors his account, he's hardly going to be show his vulnerable side to us – something he desperately needs to process what happened.

Let's be honest: if most of us we're thrown, we wouldn't cope or cope similarly to how Jay would. Just my two cents. Hope I haven't offended anyone, I know I was a tad emotional....Sad

I don't know about you, but when I'm told by a mysterious follower to go back to the creepy, abandoned house I checked out before, I'm sure as shit not going back at night.

But wouldn't he be less likely to be caught if it was at night?

Is that really the thought process when you're being chased by Slenderman?

The derpiest thing Jay ever did, in my opinion, was go back to the house more than once, and at night for that matter. Perhaps the circumstances pursuaded his eagerness to obtain answers which makes it slightly more understandable, but no matter which way you look at it, I don't think most non-fictional people would do that.

In any event, I don't think Jay is as derpy as we all like to joke about. His tactics can be borderline of highly inefficient, but I don't think most of us would be able to handle the situation much better than him. Wink

He is becoming more and more competent it seems, however he is truly a terrible liar and I don't think that will change.

Edit: Also how is this for being dumb?

-Being stalked by Masked Man.
-Gets replies by TTA on his videos.
-Decides to stalk Masked Man.
-Tells everyone on YouTube and Twitter complete with updates.

Now what if TTA or Tim just so happened to read Jay's twitter in the past few months?

Yeah, it's fun to joke about, but Jay really doesn't do that many goofy things given the situation he's found himself in. He just needs to realize that home invasion isn't the answer to all of life's problems.

I think we latch onto Jay being derpy instead of confronting our suspension of disbelief in the situations Troy has to put Jay in. Jay actually seems very methodical, and hesitant to jump to conclusions; unlike many here.

We consider Jay stupid for going to that same house on three separate occasions, two of which were in the dead of night, but it's also possible that he just has testicles of steel

I know, right?

People called him out for not knowing that Tim was the one behind the mask, when for awhile the only evidence was the fact that they both wore the same jacket. He just didn't want to lead his followers in the wrong direction. Besides, it's not like he didn't let out the biggest "I knew it" sigh when Tim was unmasked.

Seriously, the one time Jay DID jump to conclusions was when he said that Tim and TTA were the same person, and look how that turned out.

'Documentary on hotels'? Yeah, it's funny in retrospect. But you try coming up with a lie on the spot about why you walk around with a camera to protect yourself from an evil creature who makes your best friend kill people. Tell people the truth and they'll fucking put you away.

And whoever brought up the '7 months missing' thing is absolutely right. I get freaked out when I have a few HOURS missing from my memory. If I was missing an entire day, I'd be scared. A week, I'd be terrified. 7 months? Jesus. You can't expect him to just brush it off and go win the world's best detective award.

If Jay has one quality working against him, it's that he's a bad liar. All his other behavior is completely understandable.

Personally, I thought he gave Jessica three different answers showed us he WAS having difficulty with his memory... just because he's recorded it doesn't mean he watches every recording he's made of himself.

I also thought that was what helped initiate some of her trust in him to reveal she was having problems with this as well.

Never though of that that way, huh... I think you may be right.

I have a question about the missing seven months, and some potential derpitude:

Jay is constantly filming during that time, right? We know that, because he eventually gets all his tapes out the safe and starts uploading the important bits.

Now, with all the stuff that happens to him- arriving at Creepy Abandoned House #2, Getting attacked by Masky AGAIN; FINDING. ALEX. Which was the entire point of his driving all the way out to RosswodTown in the first place. He never once stopped at a Starbucks, or a Home Depot, or a freakin' McDonalds (anywhere with Wi-fi) and uploaded a video?

I mean, I'm just saying. He could have. He has a laptop- we know that from the first entry of the season. There are footage files on his computer (noentry- though it could be debated whether he put that there or not).

It just doesn't seem like the smart thing to do. When Jay wakes up from being Operated On, he uploads videos to the account "In case anything happens," but during the ENTIRE seven months he doesn't do that at all?

Derp, Jay. Herp a derp durr, Jay.
-Tycho
