 Why is everything connected?

I guess this is more of a rant than anything else, but the PM help board is really dead anyway.

I hate how nowdays, on the internet everything is connected. It's GREAT for some ARGs, but if you're just starting out, it is really really time consuming and annoying.

Example.

I have an ARG with about five accounts right now. Running it by myself, and it's not a big deal with the posting and keeping characters straigh and such. THAT'S EASY. I've got it planned out. The big deal this this stupid situation that happens on a weekly basis as I backlog for my ARG.

I'm logged in as Sam. And I need to email the character of Rachel with something that I need for part of the game. Kay, good. Then I log out as Sam and in as Rachel, which isn't a big deal, it's email. Makes sense you'd have to log out.
Then I need to use my personal, real life account for youtube for a school video I need up upload and it uploads it to my Rachel account because I didn't realize that it automatically logs you in according to the gmail you have. I don't even have an account for Rachel on youtube.
So I hurry up and take the video down, close the channel and pray it never happens again. I have to go to gmail and sign out as Rachel, sign in as myself, and THEN upload the video.

While the video is uploading to my own account, I have time so I have Sam update her blog. But it won't let me sign in with who I want on Blogger, it just sees who're logged into on gmail and creates a blog for you. So then I have to go BACK to gmail, log out and log in as Sam, post on the blog, got BACK to gmail again, log out again and have Rachel update her blog in response. Then Fred has to update his blog, so I have to remember his password and log out of gmail as Rachel and in as Fred, just to post on Fred's blog that he got back safe.

WHY do they do this? It's so time consuming and pointless. Even in a non-ARG way, if someone finds out JUST your gmail user and password, they can have access to ALL of your accounts, Facebooks and EVERYTHING automatically. It just doesn't make any sense.

/rant

Don't I know it! I keep having to log out of my personal youtube every time I want to check Louis' email or youtube, and then I'm not getting my updates, and I have to log into everything over and over again. I'm glad I have a team so that I don't have to keep track of some of our other story elements, because then I'd just die. I have maybe four separate google accounts to make my games and real life work. It's silly, especially since one basically only uses blogger, two basically only use youtube (myself being one of those), etc. CAN'T I JUST LOG INTO ONE!

So... yes, I feel your rage.

I couldn't agree more (even though I'm not running a game right now). Having everything inter-connected is a terrible idea. I remember when Youtube changed to make you have to log in with your Google password. WHY. They might argue that it's for convenience but they can't have been bothered to make it optional.
I do find that owning a mobile device makes it much easier to manage multiple accounts at once. But that doesn't solve anything else.

Have you thought of using different email services for your different characters? Help to avoid that mistake you wrote about.

Ask Labfly - she managed multiple email accounts and wrote them in entirely different voices (we players thought there was at least 5 different PMs and it turned out she did them all herself).

I'm sorry Konamouse. I did not listen to you. I just incorporated another email into my game (kinda) and I used gmail. And now I have more to worry about. AND IT'S STUPID. I should have thought a little harder.

I got into the habit of using separate browsers for separate characters/uses. If you make sure to keep the sign-ins clean and the cookies cleared out, it's pretty easy to maintain at least a *few* accounts without login problems.

And if you've got multiple profiles set up on your OS, it may even be worth the pain of signing in and out that way, as well - you could customize each profile to be completely "in character" for that user.

Ohh, I like that profiles idea, Krystyn! Also if you're using Chrome or Firefox, their private browsing features will not preserve states between windows (tabs yes, windows no), so you could have two different browsers open and logged into different Gmail accounts without conflicting, and when you close the window, it auto-logs out.

I figured that the profiles and private browsing idea would work best. Thank you all so much for the advice! Very helpful for a newbie.
