Echo Bazaar

So I just started playing Echo Bazaar, a twitter-associated Steampunk sort of RPG, when I noticed that http://twitter.com/EchoBazaar was retweeting tweets that appear to be made by characters in-game. The "Mr. *insert-commodity-here*" characters are sort of Captains of Industry of the different markets going on in Fallen London, and there are a few posting tweets about commodity prices, sniping at each other, and some player interaction. Thoughts?

The ones I've found so far:
http://twitter.com/Mr_Spices
http://twitter.com/Mr_Wines
http://twitter.com/Mr_Stones

Immediate thought is that it's just an extra dimension to the game, to have fun and play around with. That said, the game is fun, and I encourage all to play. Link is at http://echobazaar.failbettergames.com (it will want you to be logged into Twitter since it uses OAuth).

I've managed to find 9 of the Masters of the Bazaar...

A lot of these came from the list that EchoBazaar is following, but some aren't on there (Mr_Eaten springs to mind). If you look at the story snippets and find more names of the Masters, it's usually a good bet you'll find their Twitter account.

Aha, more ARG-ish elements! My hunch is proving to be bearing fruit!

I just got a direct message on my twitter from # Mr_Eaten, saying simply "Yes." I haven't said anything to Mr. Eaten, so this completely out of the blue. I replied "I must confess my confusion, sir, as I don't recall asking you a question. Could you enlighten me as to your enigmatic answer?" So we'll see if this expands into anything cool.

Oh, even if this doesn't turn into an ARG, this is squealing good fun. I don't even like RPGs, and this is absolutely addictive.

I agree. It's utterly compelling fun.

They also seem to have a project named Prisoner's Honey on the go, which could tie directly into Fallen London.

Ditto, ditto, ditto, and since jello and Lex are playing I finally gave it a try. Way too much fun. Sitting here waiting for my action to roll over. I'm doing this as Hotwing_rummm. There's not really an option for drunk parrot characters, but I'll make it work...

Oh... kay. There is a lot of interaction going on twitter, and I've gotten myself involved in some kind of personal story arc, which I post below in the interest of full disclosure. Please don't take offense if I play things close to the chest at first, or seem like I don't want to tell all. Mostly I'm just thinking and trying to figure out what to do.

If you are new to Echo Bazaar or haven't tried it, I wrote a rambling review about game mechanics and why I'm so hooked. This might help some newer players navigate some of the language in their user profile too.

If you didn't follow the weird conversation on Twitter, the discussion below might not make sense. Here is my own personal story so far.

For ease of use, this is the most relevant part of that post:
Quote:

And then, there is this issue of payment to Mr_Eaten. Apparently that was not a gift. This is our half-hidden conversation, which played out over several baffling hours:

@Mr_Eaten, my handome lad has gone, and now I only have a gnawing relentless hunger, a pining heart... But, still yours, delicious as ever.

Mr_Eaten
Gratifying. Gratifying. You are a woman of potential. Pleased to discuss a replacement the moment that your account is settled.

Ah, uh, @Mr_Eaten, out of curiosity, & so I can plan my budget for the next fiscal year, what's the bill? It's a tax write-off, isn't it?

Mr_Eaten
Quantity depends on currency. How much of your skin do you currently require?

I'm afraid I need 100% of my delicious silken skin to make a living good @Mr_Eaten. Ask @Mr_Wines. I have plenty of other assets, though.

Mr_Eaten
100%? I require only unused and neglected corners and portions.

Ah, @Mr_Eaten, now I see where your particular appetites lie. Put that way, it shouldn't be so hard to comply. But how fresh must they be?

@Mr_Eaten and importantly, does it have to be all mine? You'll find I have the finest, but I might have to...find alternate means of supply.

Mr_Eaten
You want to give me someone else's skin? What kind of barbarian do you take me for?

No offense meant @Mr_Eaten. I see you are a man of the most ... discriminating ... tastes. Shall we talk of quantity and time, then?

Mr_Eaten
An unregarded corner only. To bear the sign. Clathermont can see to it. [Clathermont is the creepy tattoist]

@Mr_Eaten, all is clear. I shall make arrangements with Clathermont forthwith.

Mr_Eaten
Once you have discovered my name, ensure that it is clearly and legibly inscribed.

So.... there you have it. I made a deal, and now I have to get Mr_Eaten's true name in a possibly demonic tattoo. I was thinking "how am I going to extract flesh from this game" up until the very end. This... this is something else.

FYI: Clathermont
Quote:
What's so special about Clathermont's Tattoo Parlour?
Letters in and out of the city are routinely read. But one does not often intimately search a gentleman, and never a lady. So, the rumour has it, Clathermont and his three glum-faced tattooists - triplets, who some say are his daughters - although some hint at a more intimate relationship - hm - where was I?

Ah yes. The rumour has it, spies come to Clathermont's to have messages tattooed in less public areas of their skin. This has, of course, been responsible for a scandalous vogue for secret tattoos.

Especially for you guys that have been jumping in, I love it. I love having a free for all with the Masters. Love love love. If this isn't an ARG, I don't care, it's infinitely more engaging than some of the "ARGs" I've dabbled in.

Also, I really think they are adding new sidebars and importantly, revising -existing- sidebars to include information from our public conversations.

Also, a new Master has entered the arena - one http://twitter.com/Mr_Mirrors. No idea who he is or how he relates.

Also, I think that Mr_Eaten might live in the well that crops up every once in a while in the Opp cards, because in a recent draw, I had the "Peer into the well" card, and the voice that was described was "raw, broken like a dog barking... and strangely familiar." (Note: not an exact replica of the text) However, the only way to get that is to have the "Hungry" status that our correspondant in the field, Miss Diszsaster, acquired in her interactions with Mr_Eaten.

I'm really impressed with the amount of interaction that seems to go on. That's super for a game like this. Maybe it falls off as more players join, but it's pretty awesome.

Just curious, is there a way to trade stuff with other players?

I dunno. There's something about Mr Mirrors that makes me thing he's not real.

Thanks for the tip, Jelloarm. I think I've gotten that card before and it gave me nightmares, fate, and some swag. Of course, that doesn't mean they haven't changed it.

I don't think there's a way to give stuff to other players, but I don't know.

I believe in Mr. Mirrors because Echo Bazaar's twitter retweeted him. So that's my argument. Razz

Okay, so far this looks like a total blast. Signed up, currently in Spite trying to catch tabby cats so they can tell me secrets, which I'll somehow rent a room with. >.> Tweeting on FractalP every now and then.

EDIT: Ah, I see. So you get an adventure action every... 7 minutes or so, up to a maximum of 10? (Whoops, wrong game there Razz)
