What makes you think this is a stereogram at all?

God this is a really tough one! The colors are too bright for my eyes to stay focused enough. It looks like there might be a whale or a dinosaur or some sort of Lochness monster in the water...

I...don't think this is a stereogram. Unless you mean steganography; an embedded message in the image data, rather than a visual L/R hidden image?

It's a stereogram alright. I see it in the water and in the sky...it's just too hard to keep focused as the colors are too light...

Would this be associated with an Irish geocache? The file-name would seem to hint at a Christmas theme Unless the reference is more literal and they are talking about being dashed on the rocks.
There's a textual big hole in the code that makes up the image that sometimes is indicative of a form of steganography. I don't see any stereography, though.

Yes it is for an Irish Geocache. How could you tell?
The name is just saved as part of my user name. I have been told that the image is an autostereogram and that there is text in the waves between the rocks and the bottom of the picture.

the problem is there are no reference points. I can't find any two spots that are even similar enough to 'join' and produce a hidden depth image...
was it the CO who told you? What's the GC number?

I put the pic on a imaging manipulation forum thinking that might find a solution and someone straight away said it was a stereogram. I can't see anything in it and nor can anyone else that I have asked so maybe it is not one afterall
The Code is 227G1 but you have to be a premium member.

no worries
So the image is hosted on gc.com, which means there likely isn't any data retained in the JPG data itself. There are some hidden bits of red herrings in the cache listing... but as a 3.5 difficulty, I can't see it being a very complex steganographic hide if it is one...
I've taken a look at the data, raw, via JPG snoop , and an online exif reader , but haven't seen anything that stands out. I mean it's possible something could be hidden in some of the legitimate meta tags.
* There's a hidden herring in the description
* Carlyan Rocks is spelled backwards below the title (I'm sure that's intended to be a hint, somehow)
* Instructions for the coordinates are also hidden below the windsockers thumbnail
* The background image looks to be a 3rd party image hotlinked from some other website (not likely important).
* I also split the image into various layers attempting to spot anything that looks like a pattern indicating a possible stereogram... nothing stood out =(
That's all I've got from some relatively cursory scanning on the customizable listing content... but for discussion, I think I'll leave it at that since these forums are search engine spidered, and may result in quick solves for anyone googling for keywords
But maybe that'll help you a bit in your quest for the solution!

That's it. But for a brief moment it's like I can almost see something and then it quickly vanishes.

My findings are aligned with thebruce. The reason I was asking about the Christmas theme was due to both the file name and the Modify date on the file being just before Christmas eve in 2009, while the pic was actually created eight months prior to that.

stereogram? What stereogram? Bogus The member has posted this alleged stereogram on several forums.
I create stereograms for a living an am the author of three current books on stereograms with two more in the works, Feb and Fall 2012.
I can see these things with one eye closed (OK I am exaggerating).
I see absolutely nothing.
Perhaps the member who posted this can also post the depth image?
