I've tried
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the usual turning numbers into letters thing, first with the difference between the written and actual totals, which gave me EDBATOED...
... which doesn't seem to be anything. I've gotten similarly nowhere with using

the correct totals...
... and wouldn't
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
using millions just add a bunch of meaningless zeroes
?

Your second tactic seems like it should have given part of the correct answer. What result did it give you?
Also, the part about billions . . .
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Is only important for the sake of the final answer.

So far I have
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
584,761 / 604,342 / 609,471 / 863,636 / 672,457 / 767,685 / 95,945 / 863,630
which gives me, um,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
EHDGFA F0DCDB F0IDGA HFCFCF FGBDEG GFGFHE IEIDE HFCFC0
by the "usual" method. Feeling exceptionally stupid on this one!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Take your eight totals and calculate the deltas from what is shown. You get eight letters but I'm damned if I can figure out how to type them for the win.

If the eight letters are the right ones, it would look like a word. That by itself, however, is not the answer.

Got it! Thanks! Turns out my initial thinking was pretty close before I started mucking it up and making it more complicated.
