second to last paragraph...

"Jeff is already working on his next project, but won't say too much about it. He does let on that it will be "audacious, and all over the world," and will start in San Francisco's Mission District. It will involve urban exploration and community building, and may even generate revenue."

also unfortunately I didn't log the article, but i did come across a Q&A article which mentioned that at the time the article interview had taken place, Beta-Testing had already begun. The article was dated/published in March of this year...

The Latitude Society site
attempt to join

so i sent a join request to the google site The Latitude Society

https://sites.google.com/site/latitudesociety/home

I got an email back from Meredith saying it was a closed group.
I then got a second email from another member saying it was a closed group.

I emailed the whole group, for some reason they included everybody in the email, and I asked them if they were connected with thelatitude.com and explained about the movie and wondered if they were aware of it.

meredith wrote back saying they were not affiliated and apologized for the inconvenience. (nobody else responded)

here's the thing, their site has a link called the laws that specifies, when dealing with outsiders to tell 2 truths and one lie, and since the first two are obviously true, i have to assume the 3rd is a lie...

it's a very odd site, and includes codes, i'm not sure it's so easy to dismiss as a possible connection, but, as i said, i have no experience with these types of games, but i am very intrigued.

because I live on the east coast, i am very hopeful this new game is going to be more widespread...

perhaps some others want to explore this, i emailed them another time and have heard nothing since.

Very cool info. Thank you so much for sharing your info! This really helps us all have a better understanding of what to do and where to look.

That website was linked several pages back and its a good place for odd info. Did you happen to see the "Please, do not request to join." On the page you linked us? I am sure they have something to do with the game however it could be a site for the admins and not the players.

Observations after poking around:
- there is a powerpoint file you can download from their Membership page with criteria on how to attain varying levels of membership
- the varying levels of membership require knowledge of some (or all, depending on membership level) of "the languages", of which 3 are listed; Byksut, Japanese, and Glow
- both Byksut and Glow have a code-key in the language page
- when applying the keys to their respective "languages", "Byksut" becomes "Locust", while "Glow" becomes "Told"
- Japanese is listed in the language page, but there are no details (could fit into the "two truths and a lie"?)
- there are a lot of typos reminiscent to the EPWA postings

Not saying all these observations have anything to do with anything, but I figured I'd dump my findings.

The Latitude - Glyph text

Not sure if anyone made notice about the glyphs on https://thelatitude.com/book/1 in that even though when copied and pasted, you get "lorem ipsum sit dolor", if you compare it to the glyphs, those glyphs represent the letters _in_ "lorem ipsum sit dolor".

Maybe it's not a placeholder in the standard sense, so much as it is a handful of some glyph set we may need to solve future puzzles.

The glyphs are a font referred to in the CSS as "LatGlyph" and can be downloaded in various formats from The Latitude website. The name of the font is simply nonchalance when downloaded so I assume that the font was made by Nonchalance and will be reused at some point. And if not, now I've got a cool new font on my compy. Razz

The font can be found in .eot
.woff
.ttf
and .svg

You can install the font and look at it yourself pretty easily.

EDIT: Looking at the font, there are only symbols for alphabetic characters, all other numbers and symbols look to be the same so far.
Also, the font looks incomplete I guess. There's a capital and lowercase glyph for Aa-Oo but Pp-Zz has only lowercase symbols.
Also also, there doesn't seem to be any rule for the design of each glyph. The 'z' glyph looks kinda like 'z' but the 'n' glyph looks nothing like 'n'. And the glyphs for 'm' and 'n' look nothing alike either.

Contacting Latitude Google site
possible dead end

i contacted them by requesting to join, even though their site said not to.

they emailed me back, as i said above.

deciding to take their 'laws' literally, i interpreted them saying they were not affiliated with latitude.com as a lie. i emailed the main member again, saying as much and kindly requesting more information about their group, saying i wanted to share it with this forum so that they could clear up the confusion. earlier today i got one message from her, and then another random email from someone else in the group, somewhat threatening. So I will not be contacting them anymore. as i am new to this ARG thing, i'm gonna go back to lurking mode and see what others find.

first reply today : "It is not a lie me and my friend made up this group for an activity at our school we have no connection to the latitude we just have code names and be weird "

second email from another member : "We are of the Latitude master race. Ask no more questions, or we shall be forced to hunt you down."

Glyphs & Google Site codes

I've been having some fun with the codes from the google site. Haven't uncovered anything yet, but if you translate something through both codes, they come out the same no matter what code you start with.

Also, when you paste the glyphs from the latitude site, the come out as Latin. they could translate to anything from " china is the focus" to "the web is pain"
not particularly useful to me..

I just watched, "The Institute" because of my interest in ARG's. Never got the chance to partake in one and I wanted to see what I was missing out on. I remember reading about this ARG that took place in a city I've been excited about it ever since. After viewing the movie, I too, noticed "The Latitude Society"and decided to play along. Happy to have found the website and see that people are still talking about it on here. I thought I was late and missed out on yet another amazing ARG.

Guessing no one found out the password to the website yet?

All I noticed was that the 3 sections on the front page consist of [4 characters] [10 characters] [4 characters]

Trying to become a member by reading that .pptx file, I've noticed each frame mentioned "get cookies",
This a clue?

We're wondering how EXACTLY did you contact them? They don't provide any emails from what I could find. Unless I'm just a blind rookie who doesn't know what he's talking about. <--more likely the case.

Also, that threat you got may refer to this:
"No bullying. Any Member caught being excessively rude will be put on trial. Guilty Members will be denied a crayon, as well as their trustworthiness. "

Which ever email(s) threatened you need to be called out on trial possibly.

Re: Contacting Latitude Google site
possible dead end

Like a lot of you I saw The Institute on Netflix very recently. I was utterly confused. But I saw the credits, did a search, and landed here. Let me admit right now that I had no idea what an "ARG" was until reading the stickies here a few days ago and looking it up on the wiki. So forgive my ignorance, this is all brand spankin' new to me. I'm a software engineer and my bread and butter is web security (threats, vectors, exploits, defenses etc.) and I'm most comfortable wearing the white hat. However, curiosity got the better of me so I switched sides a little bit just to poke around on thelatitude.com. Yes it felt awkward at first...

I also looked at the google site by the same name. It's totally unrelated. Leave the poor high school kids alone. However thelatitude.com is the real thing. It's being set up by Nonchalance. From what I can tell the site is still in a beta testing phase. The general idea is the prospect receives an invitation to join the society. He or she enters a pass phrase in the three input fields provided. There are then a series of disclaimers generally warning the prospect not to go around blabbing about the Society. (I will honor that by not posting screenshots or saying too much.) The prospect is given a key (yes a physical one!) and sets up a specific time to go to a certain physical location. There is a very important clue (again I won't be specific here) that the prospect must obtain from the physical location and input back into the web site to unlock the next phase of the game.

So no one here needs to worry that the train has left the station without them. Might as well relax and give Nonchalance the time it needs to finish its testing. When they're ready I'm sure a goon will knock on your door at 3 AM and hand you some sort of elaborate scroll. Smile

While I'm here let me give a huge shout out to Jeff Hull and his team. I watched the documentary twice and I felt I understood what he was trying to do. I appreciated the Web 1.0 and analog details that pervaded his game. I share his concern about the current "Geography of Nowhere" in which many of us currently live. He used the real world as a stage to get us off of our stupid devices and to engage with the built environment at a human scale rather than whizzing by everything in a car like an idiot. Yes, the whole Jejune thing was a tongue-in-cheek swipe at the New Age movement and the sad commodification that has come out of it. But there was also an underlying truth to the message. "Nonchalance" is that effortless way of being when we stop trying to figure things out for ourselves, let go, and let the universe guide us in subtle ways. Yogis and Buddhists know this path. And I've already gone on too long.
