[TRAILHEAD?]thereisnolist.ca from Canadian Videogame Awards
PSN and MS points awards for solving, apparently.

The link is thereisnolist.ca

Here's a bit of backstory:

On May 18th, 2011, I was at the second annual Canadian Videogame Awards ceremony in Vancouver. During the ceremony, at one point there was a random moment where a segment of garbled video and audio filled the screens (I heard GladOS in there, and other robot/computer voices I vaguely recognize from other movies and games), which ended with the URL above.

There was a countdown timer on there which just ended at midnight (PST) last night, and has been replaced with what you see there now.

In notice that the link behind the logo in the top right corner, although it gives you a 404 error, has the string 051811CVAs in it, which would be short for the date 05/18/2011 of the CVAs (Canadian Videogame Awards), right?

But I'm wondering if there's something we're supposed to be deciphering...if this is just some viral marketing thing we're supposed to just watch, or if it's the start of something ARG-ish.

I haven't seen anyone talking about this online anywhere, so I figured I'd post a heads-up.

OK, i might as well document what is there for now:
Quote:
PHASE ONE
access code parsing underway
06/01/0211

__6MH - 8GFVK - X_G_3 - 4D4DK - _KC7_

DB CORRUPTION! *ER*INAL COMMAND: CONSOLE REBOOT

RUN NETWORK PROTOCOL CRAZY EIGHTS

CONTROLLER MAP RELOAD AB VALID, ** MISSING

the clickable area is off to the right edge of the window (i had to scroll to reach it), and the broken link points to http://thereisnolist.ca/051811CVAs.m2ts

I'm trying to transcribe the letters around that logo in the background http://thereisnolist.ca/background.jpg (it starts with ONLY and ends in .BG)

There is also an RSS feed at http://thereisnolist.ca/thereisnolist.xml

The letters around the circle are:

onlythdadsthgvdpgssdcthdtdstnowfotothdfgmdrtdst.bg

ETA: __6mh-8gfvk-x_g_3-4d4dk-_kc7_ this looks like a redeem code for a video game just missing some letters

You beat me to it. I hit to post it, but was interrupted.

Anyway, The code, oddly enough looks just like an old win98 product key. That's the first thing to pop into my head. I guess because I had a code that included the "8GFVK" line. It's missing the T & M in TERMINAL. The missing digits in the first, third and fifth parts, the T and M and the two in "** MISSING" are interesting. Source code yields nothing of significant value. the Whois shows nothing of interest, at all.

Just looked up the .m2ts file format.
it is a: BDAV MPEG-2 Transport Stream
Translation: that file should be a video. Now the only question is as to whether it should actually be there and the PM(s) has/have made a mistake, or if the link is supposed to be broken for right now.

ETA: further reading shows that is a format most commonly used on blu-ray disks.

For that letter string, Decrypto 8.5 ( http://www.blisstonia.com/software/WebDecrypto/index.php ), comes up with some interesting strings, some of which include "the best have passed the test", and variations on "now go to the game?test.??"

Maybe this is some kind of thing where a company (EA maybe?) is trying to recruit game testers?

If the string of letters is a website it might end in .ca

I've tried:
Gametest.ca
Gamertest.ca
thegamertest.ca
Nada, I'll try more but I dunno. Could be nothing more yet.

Yeah, I tried those, and a handful of others. The only thing I notice is that thegamertest.ca takes me to a GoDaddy registration page (BTW, thereisnolist.ca is registered under GoDaddy as well), but all the other URLs all take me to a standard "could not be resolved" error page.

Odd...

True, it was the only one that said it was parked for free. Could it be that they didn't think we can figure it out so fast.

When you said the site was registered with GoDaddy, I checked out "BlueHost" (thinking: GoDaddy does hosting, why would you register with one service and host on another), but it seemed legit.

I also tried replacing the .mt2s with .html .htm .xml .php and without an extension, but I got nothing but more 404s.

it does seem to be a specific sentence, and my best solution is

only the best have passed the test now go to thegamertest.ca

(though the URL isn't definitive)
Only some letters are bumped down by one, and the A's are coded as G's, which is odd.

or, visually, the difference between two would be:

Code:
onlythdadsthgvdpgssdcthdtdstnowfotothdfgmdrtdst.bg
000000111000*010*0011001010000010000011*0100100.1*
onlythebesthavepassedthetestnowgotothegamertest.ca

Where * is the only letter that differs by other than 1. (g=a)

Yup, that seems like the most likely solution. I have a feeling they just weren't ready for people solving it in less than 12 hours from launch. I don't even know how many people were paying enough attention at the awards to write down/remember that URL, and since I haven't seen what was aired from it on G4 (on Sunday, apparently), I don't know if that would have gotten any further distribution to start with. I certainly haven't seen any other mention of this besides what I've posted about it online.

By the way, in case this is a recruitment tool for some gaming company or something, I might point out that the awards sponsors are all listed here:

http://www.canadianvideogameawards.com/sponsors/

Cheers!

On the website thereisnolist.ca, there's a new post today:

*enerate *uery: PSN Online Status
Status: Dark **apter closed
Deviate from norm. Commence P*oject Ar*ham

I'm guessing this is do with Project Arkham, the new Batman game? Playstation was a major awards sponsor at the event. Smile
