Creating Sequels
And other fun stuff

So I'm just about to finish helping run an ARG that's been running for 4 1/2 months now. It was supposed to go on for another two months, but we just didn't have the player base for it. It also turned into an overly complex mess plot-wise, with two main characters, but 30+ characters to deal with total. However, we've created quite the little world surrounding it and I have every intention of making another ARG based in the same world. So, here's what I'd like to know:

I want to use a few old characters and such, but I don't want players to think that they have to know the old story to play in the new one. It's an overwhelming amount of information to understand, so how do I tell them in character that it's cool to know, but not necessary for playing the game?

Vladimir Sirn had the whole "computer systems reset" thing going on as the very first Trailhead... I only lurked for a bit, but you could pull an IG reset button or something.... I think that TJAProjects/FindTheRoom/MakingNewMemories has another variation on the reset button with one of the characters just randomly waking up in a room but hints that she's going to try and find out stuff the same as the players, but that's a bit more tricky since about 80% of the FTR/MNM players were already fans of TJAP, and the players who aren't TJAP fans are being filled in by the ones who already know what's going on, which seems to be working out pretty well so far... The same thing happened wiht Vlad, with the old players guiding the new ones and stuff, always fun and builds a stronger game community, IMO.
Could have a new character come in who's trying to find out info at the same/only slightly faster paced than the players, tha's what I've got for my ARG, I've got one character who's only goal is to update people, if you can't find an in-game reset button or a good way to let them know, kind of an IG way to update them or whatever....

Well, the thing about that is that this new ARG is supposed to take place after the first one and involve a few of the original characters how they are since the end of the game. A reset comes off as if none of it ever happened and it wouldn't work with the idea of it being a real sequel.

Jan Libby did this with Sammeeeees. A year later we got Sammeeeees II: In the Nave (check out the links in my signature for the "Story So Far" threads that describe both ARGs. If the characters are memorable, the story engaging, the setup compeling, the audience will find you (whether it's a new ARG, or a sequel).
