Now... will that lead to anything more than a single clip from the film? seems pretty meta. Why would Weyland Industries have an image from our movie?

Confused

This ARG doesn't seem very concerned about preserving immersion. From having a Fox newsletter checkbox on the signup page to releasing a still from the movie… it's not the classiest ARG I've ever experienced.

We have to keep certain things in mind. First of all, we're in March now and the movie is slated to be released in June. That's not enough time for a good ARG to be developed, if we compare it to Cloverfield or Super 8.
Furthermore, the above mentioned films were related to Paramount Pictures, while Prometheus is produced by Fox. I don't know if that's relevant but it could mean that the same team was involved in the making of their ARGs, and therefore we shouldn't expect the same from Fox.

But mostly I believe it's just that they don't have too much time to develop clues and such, and they'll resort to "easter eggs" like that picture. We still don't know, for example, the rating of this film yet. There's still a lot of it that remains a mystery to us and I'm not even talking about the plot.

1) define "good ARG"
2) comparison to Cloverfield and Super 8 leaves much to be desired Wink
3) all it takes is someone to create a "good ARG" in a short time for that statement to be false. And many would already disagree, I'm sure Smile
Anyway...

There is still hope!

I don't know about Cloverfield (before my ARG-time), but in my opinion Super8 definitely was NOT a good ARG. It had promise, but was ultimately a huge let down - especially when compared to Flynn Lives, or even Test Subjects Needed (which was about selling something so trivial as Bubblegum, at the end of the day.)

Alright well, maybe the Super 8 ARG wasn't a good comparison (I started halfway and stopped when it got too confusing for its own sake, right after that blog of the fish enthusiast was discovered), but I do believe the Cloverfield ARG was good, at least I was very engaged into it.
I still think they don't want to spoil that much with this movie in a short period of time; if they had planned this in advance, I'm sure we'd have a very compelling ARG instead of this. Maybe it's too soon to tell, but even though I liked the huge resolution picture they posted, it's a dead end from there.

I wasn't around for the Cloverfield ARG either. As for Super 8 and some of the others connected to movies - they're viral campaigns with ARGish features. The production companies are more interested in stirring up interest in their movies than they are in immersing followers in an alternate reality story. The bottom line is trying to rack up the cha-ching$$$ at the box office. IMO. So I'm not expecting a true ARG - just in it for whatever entertainment/puzzle value it might have.

There are plenty of good ARGs, just don't wait for a movie to have one these days.

The Star Trek ARG was excellent, and we should be getting ST2 started in the months to come.
Not sure where this viral is headed, but just to have something to chew on for the next few months will help the thing get here sooner!

That 6EQUJ5 image is one big download! It come's in at 6.7 megabytes! Not your normal downloaded jpeg.

I can see letters on those files or squares, that make up the rings. One of the letters is an "A", the other looks like a "Z", can't make out the third letter.

Those rings look like some kind of DNA sequence. The "A" looks like an upside down letter "V" with a dot in the middle. There is also a dot on each side of that "A". You can see this Alien lettering if you look in the lower right of the image I have posted. On the casket there are 4 rows of an Alien inscription or maybe some type of Alien DNA sequencing. You can clearly see the symbol/letter I have described.

I wonder if that 3 dot pattern is referencing back to "Super 8".

I have been following Peter Weyland on twitter. @Peter_Weyland

I should ask him about those DNA looking rings and see if he knows anything.

"Those rings look like some kind of DNA sequence."

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe its not a navigation chamber, but some kind of biological lab, where the space jockeys build synthetic organisms.

The rectangular pieces floating around the ring definitely look like files or categorized information, not really star charts. The whole image looks more biological than astrological.

Anyway, this is my first post ever, and my first time ever even attempting to participate in an ARG (if indeed this will be a full scale ARG), so do I always have to reply with a quote to another comment?

Eggs

To the right and left of the upright pod structure in the picture are two glass encased storage areas that are filled with what look like eggs, anybody else see that?

Meanwhile, there's a new website out: http://www.yutanicorp.com/
I'm not sure what to make of it though, it lacks the amount of detail Weyland Industries has, from the lack of favicon to the overall lack of information. It looks very lazy. i checked the WHOIS information and compared it to Weyland, but couldn't find anything conclusive, it might be fake.

I sent an email to the address in the logo, if they reply back I'll post the results.

So, is Yutani Corp part of the Prometheus ARG?

Looking back in the posts of this thread I saw someone already pointed out http://yutanicorp.com a while ago. I just found out since a friend over twitter linked it to me, but I assumed it was new. In any case, it doesn't look like it changed at all, so it could be OOG.
