As for Weyland vs Wayland -- take anything WAYLAND with a grain of salt.

If the only in-game connection is a very tiny, relatively blurry instance of "wayland", for which someone may have easily, and very quickly, set up red herrings to capture as much activity on "wayland" variants as possible; Whether as an intentional gamejack or not.

I'd think that if it's a typo and it was caught officially, they would forward misspellings to the proper locations. I'd expect waylandindustries.com for example to transfer visitors to weylandindustries.com

As for @WaylandCorp on twitter, possibly the same result - presumably the official response would be to register that account, and either leave it empty to stop spoofers, or direct users to the proper Twitter account (be there one, of course).

So yeah, IMO, until there's blatant in-game connection to anything "Wayland", I'd take it with a grain of salt. Gamejacking can still be done by extremely skilled people and have all the appearance of official connection, yet still play havoc with followers.

That said, it could still be official. Razz There's just no way to be sure yet as the only connection could easily be a typo that potentially could have been taken advantage of.

thanks for the heads up, guestuser17 Smile

the waylandcorp twitter account used a few twitter clients:
-web
-YoruFukurou
-twitter for ipad

the suspected twitter user uses... guess what?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

YoruFukurou

what are the odds of anybody using that particular client? it does have his signature and i'm leaning more towards this aspect of the puzzle of @waylandcorp as oog unless we officially hear otherwise.

yutani corp uses web client and rt'ed a few so that one is still up in the air for me until skyrocket media llc can be fully disproved.

It was just confirmed that the user was who I thought. @WaylandCorp is out of game unless the PM's pick it up. Smile Good work blackfeathers.

Nice sleuthing, blackfeathers. That is a prime example of what ARGers are naturally drawn to do Smile

Perhaps the Wayland Industries page is "in game" and it is there as a group of people who are "anti-Weyland" and is a page setup to fool people, or just bash Weyland Industries eventually.

Just ruminating...

First time posting since the cloverfield arg. Smile

thank you Smile

i couldn't have done it alone. thanks to guestuser17 for the tip which led to the rest. it's nice when fellow arg'ers have each others' backs. a bit of hive mind mentality helps.

gotta give the wayland twitter credit for coming clean.

Maybe some site has posted about the possibilities (and could have been a spoiler) about the movie.... like you know how certain sites try to flesh down aspects of a movie attempting to examine it even before it's released...

I couldn't think of any other reason for such post...

I think the PR mistake he's talking about is the Walking Dead Season 2 box set that has some character spoilers.

it's interesting to note that at one range of time, skyrocket media once owned weylandindustries.com:

http://www.who.is/domain_archive-com/weylandindustries.com/

it expired on 14 aug 2010 and was registered by fox's intellectual property department on 26 january 2011 - four months later.

back then, when skyrocket owned all the weyland domains, they forwarded to http://www.skyrocket.net/weyland
the server gave a 302 response & redirection to a dead 404/not found page at
http://www.skyrocketmedia.com/weyland

[speculation] -this point below are just educated guesses

weylandcorp et al domains were owned about or just after avp came out in 2004. the owner probably noticed no domain ownership and snagged it immediately.

the gap in time from expiration to acquisition from fox could be a clue to differentiating/separating skyrocket media llc from fox because:

1. sufficient time had passed where anybody could have purchased the domain after expiration.

2. fox didn't carry over the domain from the original owner. they didn't buy it from him nor does it appear to have been transferred. if they did buy it from him, one would think that weylandcorp.com / weylandcorporation.com / yutanicorp.com / yutanicorporation.com would have been of more interest or value in acquiring.

so, it's possible(not definitive) that while skyrocket is someone's webdesign service, they were holding on to the domains they were probably fans of and for the potential of a sale. weylandindustries.com was probably let go as the owner probably thought 'weylandcorporation.com' had more value to keep and wanted to save a few bucks in renewal. (best guess)

as was stated by others before -on this thread, twitter and other areas, if there's any viral or arg trail to be had at this time, it should logically appear from waylandindustries.com, the ted blog page or other known areas that are generally considered owned by fox (or the creators of the prometheus movie).

but, it also could be to our advantage to be somewhat aware of what's out there for potential oog gamejacks or even outside-the-box discoveries that might in some way be relevant to a viral arg.

transcript

i decided to transcribe peter weyland's ted 2023 speech as a point of reference.

video:

YouTube: Link

(curiously, youtube says this video is unlisted and only those with a link can see it. the youtube user is the official prometheus movie "Prometheus6812".)

peter weyland's ted 2023 speech:

t.e. lawrence, eponymously of arabia but very much an english man, favoured pinching a burning match between his fingers to put it out.

when asked by his colleague, william potter, to reveal his trick: how is it he so effectively extinguished the flame without hurting himself whatsoever? lawrence just smiled and said, "the trick, potter, is not minding it hurts."

dramatic pause / beat

the fire that danced at the end of that match was a gift from the titan prometheus. a gift that he stole from the gods. when prometheus was caught and brought to justice for his theft, the gods - well you might say they overreact a little. the poor man was tied to a rock as an eagle ripped through his belly and ate his liver over and over, day after day, ad infinitum. all because he gave us fire - our first true piece of technology.

fire.

100,000 b.c. stone tools
4,000 b.c. the wheel
9th century a.d. gun powder. what a game changer that one!
19th century. eureka! the light bulb!
20th century. the automobile, television, nuclear weapons, space craft, internet.
21st century. biotech, nanotech, fusion and fission and m theory,

and that was just the first decade!

we are now three months into the year of our lord: 2023.
at this moment now - civilisation, we can create cybernetic individuals, who, in just a few short years, will be completely indistinguishable from us.

which leads to an obvious conclusion: we are the gods now.

dramatic pause / beat

for those of you who know me, you will be aware by now that my ambition is unlimited. you know that i will settle for nothing short of greatness, or i will die trying.

for those of you who do not yet know me, allow me to introduce myself.

my name is peter weyland, and if you'll indulge me, i'd like to change the world.

applause

beat

edited change update: 'ad infinitum' in place of had him for an item
