That doesn't always mean something. Firefox likes to put a squiggly line underneath "teleportation" for some reason - and it bothers me every time I type it. Mad

Still not an actual word. Lol

Teleportation or rewatch? I'm assuming the former, given there's no squiggly under it, and my autocorrect isn't turning it into another word...

1.) I don't think TTA would give a rat's ass about whether or not rewatch is a real word. Just sayin'.

2.) People use this word all the time. Dictionaries take a while to catch up. Don't be so prescriptivist. <-- incidentally, red squiggly line under "prescriptivist," which I know to be a real word.

2a.) Spell check takes even longer than dictionaries to catch up with usage.

3.) For Lithp, whose Grammar Nazi Rage must be exploding his head by now, here -- http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110907063911AABbiYC -- it is a real word, in the OED and everything, per a British librarian answer service.

4.) Serum, I adore you. You are the Magical Prophet of the Cult of Tim. Just sayin'. Wink Brownie

Thank you, praise Tim.

However, I don't trust dictionaries published after 2001, because they managed to squeeze crap that doesn't exist in reality in there. Dictionaries now contain the word "meatspace" which pertains to any and all offline activity. I find that to be sad and demeaning to the human race.

Isn't that funny? I prefer meatspace to IRL, which many people find a more palatable substitute (see what I did there? Razz ).

I myself object to IRL because what I do online is a part of my real life, and thinking of myself as food, well, that's just reality. For some classes of critter, I am a food. Also, it was the first term I came across for the concept, thus the one I'm more likely to prefer, from a linguistic standpoint. The brain tends to be prescriptivist on its own... newer slang that the young'uns come up with usually sounds odd to the olds. Laughing

This is the first I've ever heard of the word meatspace. But it is undeniable for most of us. Away from cyberspace is a completely different life and persona than in cyberspace.

I don't want to live on this planet, anymore.

Oh, there, there, Serum. ::pats comfortingly:: It'll be okay. Not everyone bifurcates his or her life in this manner. If anything, I'm much more myself online, because I don't have any sense of other people's reactions to inhibit me from saying what I think.

Do we need a grammar/usage/writing OT thread?

But it's who we are offline that defines our existence. I just know there's a special circle of Hell reserved for me (and the other two billion internet burnouts living on this planet) where I'm wasting away in front of a computer, constantly gaining all of the knowledge in the universe and forgetting it immediately after only to repeat this process forever... man, this is gonna suck. I'd be lucky if I get out of life alive.

You would be lucky indeed, yes. Wink

I guess I don't think of the offline/online distinction in terms of persona. I am who I am, just edited for various audiences. I think we all are, really. I'm not the same person at work, at home, visiting my parents, at a funeral, writing a paper, with my friends, roaring drunk, online, etc. Nothing essential about me changes; I just choose what I will or will not display and to whom.

Am I the only one who functions in the world this way?

Maybe this is more accurate. people are who they are, they're just much more who they are when they feel like no one they know is watching. Guilty pleasures are just pleasures when no one you care about finding out is around.

I knew rewatch was a real word. You know what really pisses me off? Fucking "irregardless." No, I don't care if Firefox & some other dictionaries recognize it, I won't accept that bullshit. You can't just...stick a negative prefix on a word that's already negative! NO!

You'll love non-inflammable. It's been a "real" word for a LONG time. You'd think Flammable and inflammable would have all states covered.

Lithp, marry me. I want to have prescriptively perfect children with you. <3

"Irregardless," sadly, is in the OED, but that's a measure more of usage than propriety. I also hate the damn thing, along with the phrase "I could care less" from people who intend to indicate their utter indifference. The urge to smack is so strong...

Non-inflammable?!? Bang Head That's it. Find my mask; hide my pills. Time to go assaulting.
