It's on television where they misuse it that I really notice. Marble Hornets is good about grammar in J's text in the Entries, except I think there may be a "should of" in one of the early entries, and it mildly bothers me. I wish I could remember the Entry number where I noticed that.

elford, that is funny, and what a smart kid!

While it certainly occurred before, I blame Alanis for most of this. She has redeemed herself in other ways (Dogma, her version of Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps"), but that song really didn't help.

Ah, you're still a young pup, my friend.

Thanks you guys! He's now a funny and smart 16 year old.

Wow, we really need J to get those tapes to play!

There are two types of people posting in this forum today: people discussing their grammar pet peeves and those who think it's hilarious to post in the twitter thread when there is NO NEW TWEET.

Anyhooo, what is everyone's favorite word? Mine's mellifluous.

Somehow my husband has been sucked into the culture of using "ironic" to describe situations that are merely ODD. I bite my tongue regularly and hope that it's a phase that will pass. At least he's not telling me that his "liberry" books are overdue. That's another one I hear every once in a while in conversations around me.

My favorite word right now: crenellated

Ironically, I like the word migraneur (oh, red squiggly line for that!) -- it looks so French and artsy, as if the act of suffering a headache were some sort of creative accomplishment...

... said Grumple, scarfing down the palliative medication as the prodrome appears. See? All sorts of cool words associated with this fucking pounding in my head!

The dead horse you're all beating is so dead that I'd go so far to say that it's cadaverific.

About the people who are "misusing" the word irony/ironic. Aren't they using poetic irony to describe a real life situation?
I'm only mentioning this because I brought up something, that I read on unfiction, in my English class a couple of days ago. Someone said that thier husband saw a car that crashed near a "drive safely" sign and he laughed, apparently because he thought it was "ironic" that a car crashed near a sign about safe driving.

I think it would be ironic if everyone were made of iron.

People need more iron in their diet!

See, but that's a perfectly appropriate use: the "Drive safely" sign and the accident are opposite in meaning. What folks are ranting about is people who use the word "ironic" when the situation they describe is actually unfortunate (see: all the lyrics of the Alanis Morissette song "Ironic") or just "off" somehow.

Another example, one you probably hear everyday: Person A is complaining about something bad that happened to him, and Person B chimes in, "Oh, I love it when that happens." That's sarcastic, to be sure, but it's also verbal irony, because Person B doesn't love it, he hates it when that happens. See?

And I do believe I accidentally made the latter situation worse.

Does look like a little green alien killed itself all over it.

Or if instead of shooting bullets, all guns squirted a healing salve that cured all wounds!

Ah, okay. That one post I saw about an ironic car crash has been bugging me for a long while. My English teacher said it was a perfectly fine example too. Thanks for the info.

Right now I'm leaning towards merging this with the OT thread or closing it. I think the latter choice is going to win out, though.

Could you merge it please? I for one was rather enjoying the discussion. Wink

EDIT: Thanks Zarggg

The incorrect usage of irony has always been a HUGE pet peeve of mine. However, I kind of wonder if Alanis truly misunderstood irony, or was just being a troll in that her misuse of irony was in and of itself, ironic.
