I think the biggest contention is the use of poetic irony as.. irony. A dog catcher that's mauled by a wolf, for instance. That's poetic justice, called poetic irony as the dog catcher met his end from an animal so similar to those he catches. Irony in its literal definition though is sarcasm. "Oh, that's GREAT." after a tree limb breaks a person's windshield. That statement is irony. The event is nothing but unfortunate.

Well, a situation can be truly ironic, too. Oxide's example of the car crash near the "Drive Safely" sign is an instance of this (the opposition here being safety vs. danger). People starving/dehydrating to death in the midst of material they don't realize is edible/potable (I've run across this theme in various forms in Science Fiction, though I'm drawing a blank at the moment to name a source) would be another. These are both unfortunate and ironic.

The problem is when people think that something merely unfortunate ("rain on your wedding day" -- sorry, I can't stop myself from harping on poor Alanis) qualifies as ironic, when no such linkage can be implied (wedding =/= day of clear skies).

But yes, nearly all sarcasm involves irony. Not all -- I've noticed that Geneaux is particularly skilled at the kind that involves understatement or dry wit. But the ironic kind of sarcasm is much more common.

I don't know if Alanis was trolling us or not, but when she wants to, she can be deliciously sarcastic. I cannot recommend highly enough her video cover of "My Humps"

Yes, I'd say a better example of situational irony is someone's deliberately trying to drive carefully causing the car accident.

I got my cousin to watch it with me a while back.

"Alex is such a dick."

Excellent bit of unintentional foreshadowing there.

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS wasn't as good an episode as I'd been hoping.

I have avoided this whole series. I was so disappointed with the Christmas episode.

I was really mad about the Special Weapons TARDIS not showing up, how else can you have an episode with "Every TARDIS ever!"?

Noice! Laughing

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Also, ow. I've just been trout-slapped into next week by The Oatmeal. Pardon me while I wipe this fish-slime off my face. Then I'll be going off to find a fried food and a Jet Ski.

Not my intention at all, rest easy. This discussion was way more civilised than the ones he's talking about. And (rightly) critical or "Neurosis" Morissette Wink

You talking us with the $20 joke or him with the ten-year ex?
