I don't really understand the fascination with the word "filler." I can't think of an episode that didn't add something to the story. Some moved the plot, some added to the mystery, some fleshed out the characters or introduced locations. Some were about backstory, and some were about jump scares, but I think all of them added something. Heck, even the minor tweets give us some insight into what Jay was doing or thinking, or set up the context of the next video. So if an update adds something to the story, then how is it "filler?" I don't get it.

"enttry 37," especially. I know it has a troubled OOG production history, but the video itself could have massive implications for the rest of the story.

I don't understand the propensity to call something "not filler" if so much as .01% of it adds something to the plot.

Filler is padding, in its most basic definition. It exists to bridge the gap between major developments.

And let me tell you, some of the entries do have a lot of that.

This is actually an easy thing to explain, partially because I've literally been thinking about it for years. People don't understand that MH should be watched as a season, rather than as individual entries. Not every entry can be wholly exciting, and some have to be fairly boring in order to work. But people get jealous and want EVERYTHING TO HAPPEN AT ONCE.

Yes, I understand what it means when people say "filler," I just thnk it's a silly concept. In a web series like this one, where episodes are generally well under ten minutes long, if every episode was a plot episode, then there just wouldn't be time to flesh out all of the other important things like character, background, mystery, motif, imagery, geography, context, and so on. In a normal hour-long TV serial, the plot arc moves forward in only a few of the 44 minutes, and in the rest of the time we get to know the characters and setting, and all the other things that writers like to show us to flesh out the world. Those things are just as valid as plot. Why do folks insist that Marble Hornets focus only on plot at the expense of these other wonderful things? So yes, an entry can still add much to the story, even if it adds 0.00% to the plot.

More than that, though, the tone of the "this is filler" posts usually makes me think that the posters mostly care about trying to make themselves seem clever or superior to the mere writers that produce this stuff. Even if one wants more plot movement, "filler" has become a pejorative term, and it's unnecessary.

Personally, I have a problem with MH's filler because it does not make sense for MH to have filler. Jay specifically says that he removes anything where nothing happens. He is not very good at this.

Also, some of MH's filler isn't even the "good filler" that you are referring to. It's just "I'm jackassing around in the woods for 4 solid minutes." By about the 4th time we've seen the abandoned hospital, we really don't need to see how Jay gets there.

Take-home message: Filler isn't necessarily bad, but it wouldn't kill them to have more timeskips either.

I don't know, most of it could be justified. After all, Marble Hornets (the Youtube channel) is supposed to be, In-Game, a journal of his investigation. Some people just really pad down their journals and diaries.

If your position is that some entries are poorly paced or structured within themselves, then we very much agree. I'm by no means suggesting that every shot or scene is golden. These guys are amateurs, and as much talent and promise and creativity as they've shown in this series, they're not perfect. I'm just saying that everything I remember them posting seemed posted for a reason - one reason or another, even if it wasn't executed particularly well. In that sense, they add to the story, therefore I'm not a fan of the word "filler."

To bolster the point, I'll borrow yours: Jay assures us that he only posts footage in which things happen. So, he must believe that things are happening - maybe not plot things, but things important enough to share. Whether he has good taste or not, I leave to your judgment, but I don't think these things were simply released into the wild to pad the video count. That makes them more than "filler."

We'll see him again. There's no way Entry 52 was his last appearance.

Jay: So do you remember what happened with Alex?

Tim: I shot him.

Jay: Oh well if that's all- WHAT!?

Tim: And now I'm goin' down to Slender's Fix-It shop... to fix Slender.

Just a simple point and click mechanism... When he comes inside, just open the door, and shoot him. Then we, just you and I, can go. To the ark.

That's actually exceptionally unlikely. But whatever, I know better than to actually try to have a discussion with you.
