I wouldn't really worry about this, as the DVD has exclusive content such as commentary, deleted scenes, bloopers, etc. that wouldn't be on your site. Plus the DVD is a nice item to have because it doesn't require an Internet connection and comes in a nice box and all.

@TheFuss: You could always provide a link to the DVD website on the page as well if you're concerned about it.

That's sort of what I was trying to point out in the post I made above, and that TheFuss was trying to clarify in his response. The timelines (at least as they are now) are text, links, and timestamps, which are useful for those of us familiar with the series, but might put up a wall for people not familiar with how the series works.

You're right in insinuating that anybody could technically go to the timeline and figure it out if they wanted to, but I think what TheFuss is going for is something that's all in one webpage, containing all the embedded videos, tweets, pics, etc. that can be scrolled through chronologically. Like a one-stop shop for the series that newbies to MH can be linked to and see everything there is to see in one place, without having to go back-and-forth between YouTube channels and the Twitter account.

this is what the sticky contains though, it has all the tweets and videos in order with links

Oh I understand that, and I realize that this doesn't seem at face-value like anything new. The difference with what TheFuss wants to do is make one stand-alone website (not a thread on the forum, not an article in a wiki) that would have an interactive timeline, containing, not the links to everything, but the actual images, embedded videos, etc. You'd start at the Intro and Entry #1, and as you scroll up through the timeline you'd see the Tweets, TwitPics, MH and TTA videos in order, all right there within the page.

It'd be a more accessible version of the timeline stickied in the forum for people just happening upon Marble Hornets for the first time who might not get all the different venues the content comes through, and who might not find the Wiki/uF forums or understand exactly what it is they're searching for.

In the context of what he was saying, that's actually a legitimate sentence: [You,] think[:] iPhone text messages. Although if not read totally in context that is quite tharol-like. Laughing

And that sticky is very useful. It's also a massive wall o' text. I've seen people look at it, turn to me, and say something to the effect of "I don't understand a word that says, just whisper it in my ear between episodes." They're daunted because it's daunting. It's a lot of information to trawl, especially when you're not at all certain what you're looking for.

It's a neat idea, Fuss. The only hitch is presentation. What kind of timeline were you thinking of? One that moves? One that plays in the site, that's what you seem to be implying. Would it be on a horizontal line or a vertical one? (Yes, it's probably too early to be thinking about that. Still, any ideas?)

lol wut

the sticky lists them in order with spaces in between making it easy to read

the text is minimal. the only reason it would be "daunting" is if someone didn't like reading paragraphs of text, or saw it as a big wall of text. most of the text is compromised of the tweets, which you're going to have to post anyway.

do whatever you want, all i'm saying is there's no need to spend all that time doing it because it already exists. you can't cut down on text without losing tweets.

I like the idea for the aesthetic value and I think it would definitely be worth it, because it seems even more accessible than the forums or the wiki.

Yes, I think we should go ahead and do it! Specially because of it's esthetical value, like Zebez said.

For this, I recommend Dipity. I'm making one for my own ARG and it's simple and looks good:

I like the idea of this. I don't think it's meant in any way to replace or be "better" than what exists now - just a different way of experiencing the series that may be easier for some depending on their preferred viewing style.

I came to Marble Hornets after the second season had ended, and I went through the series by using the Wiki and clicking through to the linked videos through that, while also having a third window open so that I could read the Unfiction threads on the individual videos. It was a bit of work juggling all those windows, but it was my preferred way of experiencing everything because I felt it was the most sort of "complete" way of doing so. On the other hand, other viewers might prefer to have everything open in one window, included the embedded videos, so that they can just immerse themselves in the one timeline.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Very Happy Thanks justsarah!

Glad to see people are getting into this! Just popping in to say apologies for being quiet in this thread, having a bit of a hectic weekend and haven't had any time to get to work on a prototype. Dipity looks pretty cool - can youtubes be embedded into the timeline directly though? For me, that's an important part of the idea.

Never tried, but I think you do. It would be idiotic if you couldn't. But anyway, if we can't embed the videos, you can just leave the link in the description.

Yeah, but if you actually take a screenshot of the tweet, it makes it much more pleasant to read, rather than having small text inside of a quote in a thread on a forum.

The whole thing would be a nice way to navigate through the series. The only two actions would be scrolling down and pressing play on the embedded videos. You wouldn't have to leave the page at all.

I've actually already made something similar to this, albeit for my own use.

I do a lot of traveling so I compressed everything (tweets/pics/videos) chronologically into an ebook with everything embedded and just update it as new content is released. It's easier than it sounds and no internet is required! Very Happy
