Truth hurts, I guess. I've run into my fair share of people who insist that graphics make the game as well. Game quality is subjective in most ways, I'm mainly drawn to games with deep stories behind them, but like Magyk said, gameplay is important as well. While good graphics can enhance the experience, I don't believe they can actually make a game good, and making them a priority usually results in a polished peice of shit.

It was way more bizarre than that. They were upset both at the fact that I was knocking old games' graphics & new games' quality. But I never said that all new games suck, & I don't think that anyone ever thought that Pac-Man looked super realistic.

What I said was that there are so many people who freak out over slightly improved graphics that it's a good sales strategy to focus on it over gameplay, story, etc.

I'd say I put story first, then gameplay, then general atmosphere, & finally graphics.

That's something I've never understood. Story first? Most video game stories are bad, and when they are not they are badly told. I guess I can understand the fun in interactive stories, but IMO gameplay, and then challenge should trump everything.

I know a lot of people like that as well, and when I point out that they might as well read books or watch movies written by people that have way more talent than video game story writers, it's like I'm speaking a foreign language.

Depends on what you're looking for in a game. The first Mass Effect, for instance, I was not a fan of the gameplay at all, but the story was amazing and was more than enough to keep me invested. Writers on a video game developement team are just as talented or untalented as writers involved in any other medium, and the resulting narratives vary in quality the same as other forms of entertainment.

I like Retro City Rampage, it combines the use of in-depth gameplay with 8-bit graphics. I don't think games need to have amazing graphics just to be good...

Go play Metal Gear Solid 1-4, King's Quest 1-6, Full Throttle, the Monkey Island Series (excluding 4, which is garbage) Uncharted 1-3, Beyond Good and Evil, Final Fantasy X, or XII (lots of people will also say VI and VII), etc.

Once you rip yourself away from generic EA games, there are amazing stories to be found.

Oi! My Sims 3 game is not generic. It's got great player cruelty potential. which is what really makes it fun. Twisted Evil

Yes. Out of boredom one time I watched my friend play that whole game from beginning to end and was entertained the entire time (granted he had practically memorized the game so it was a relatively quick playthrough).

It's not a very long game to begin with. But yes, Sierra and Lucas Arts point and click adventure games have some of the most engrossing video game stories you'll ever play. I've already mentioned Full Throttle, King's Quest, and Monkey Island - but LOOM, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, The Colonel's Bequest, The Dagger of Amon Ra, Grim Fandango - all amazing.

Did you keep the saved game file? If so, plop it back into the saved gave folder in the Sims 3 folder. If not, recreate. Smile I just recently found all the houses that I had running. I was sad too because the father of one of my sims just died before he could meet his adopted grandson. Sad Of course the adoption came about because I was making a legit run(no cheating) at the game and my sim was having a midlife crisis. Since all the females were either marries or underage. So since he was in his midlife crisis, I decided he finally discovered he was gay and had him go marry one of my other sims that I already had in the neighborhood.

:V

Also, RAEGEEEE THAT YOU CAN NO LONGER BUILD DEATH HOUSES OR HAVE ENTIRE HOUSEHOLDS OF NOTHING BUT KIDS!!!

Geez, just how intricate did the Sims get after the first installment?

Pretty much every FF title is Love It Or Hate It. I love VII, Tactics, Dissidia, & X, but hate XII & VI.

Yeah, as people have already kind of indicated, this is a sweeping generalization. Also, remember how 90% of everything is shit? If the game doesn't have a good story, I probably don't like it.

I look at it like special effects in a movie. They can be as good as they want, if there's no story stringing them together, I'm just watching over an hour of fancy explosions. It's entertaining for a little while, but it gets boring after a few minutes.

I also don't care about arbitrary challenges that have no purpose but to give me bragging rights that no one else will care about. So I have very little motivation for superbosses, sidequests, time challenges, etc. But if there is a narrative stringing those together, that is more interesting.

Also, a lot of developers, once they find a formula that works, will stick with that formula over many titles. Meaning that there is little variation in gameplay, so I might as well just keep re-playing the same game. But each game, by definition, has its own story. Whether or not said story is good is another question entirely.

Because, again, sweeping generalization. But aside from that, you can do things with a videogame's story that you can't do with a book or a movie.

For example, some games will put most of the background details in sidequests, meaning that you have to actively explore the game's world in order to get a deeper understanding of said world, character backgrounds, or basically anything that isn't part of the main narrative. This also means that you can potentially fit a larger, more intricate story than you would be able to in a book or movie, as no one wants to sit through 100 pages or 100 minutes of world building. But, if you make a game out of it, that's different. Most don't, but again, Sturgeon's Law.
