I don't know about American stuff, but in manga if a series has (x) amount of weeks losing popularity and such they'll end it.

Note how I didn't say, "unpopular," I said the exact opposite of that.

Television shows end with high, if not rising, ratings all the time. 24, LOST off the top of my head. ALIAS had its highest rated-season ever before its hiatus/cancellation (though they did bring it back for a final season.) Breaking Bad is set to end this Summer, and its ratings have been rock steady.

You can look at books, too. Harry Potter - wildly popular, ended. Lord of the Rings, only three books and done. Twilight is crazy-popular, and I think that franchise has wrapped up.

The Dark Knight trilogy, done. Harry Potter/Twilight (though based on novels) also done.

Lots of examples out there.

Context, dude, it's important. I made that statement in response to the claim that manga publishers "force" popular series to continue. And frankly, even if you didn't read the context, it should still be obvious that I'm not saying that popular things don't end, because "then explain to me how" implies knowledge of a frequent event.

Although, pedantry alert, it's always been my impression that Stephenie Meyer flaked on Twilight after all of the negative reaction to doing a series from Edward's point of view. Sure, it's "popular" in the sense that a lot of people read it, but that only looks at half of the equation.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Again, I know about American stuff, but in the manga industry (which I've only been talking about) popular stuff can still end if it loses enough popularity.

They do surveys, and based on those they give the different series in the magazine rankings. If they drop below a certain ranking for too long, the magazine and force the author/artist to end the series. So is a series is say in 3rd place, and then drops to 8th place for weeks and weeks. You can bet that the magazine will end it because it's not going back up in popularity. Now this is different from a series that starts out in 8th place and stays there for a bit because it's kept the same popularity. Now again, this is all based on reader surveys they give each week so it is highly inaccurate as readers (are supposed) to vote on a week-by-week basis.

I suppose you can say someone can "cancel" their own work by sabotaging it though.

Now in the case of TV, popular shit ends all the time even if it has high and rising ratings for any number of reasons. An actor/actress that's necessary for the show like a main or THE main character could leave to do something else once his/her contract is up for the show or maybe the writers have simply run out of ideas, etc etc.

I have new stuff to rage about now! My college is implementing some pretty annoying stuff concerning personal computers. If a student or staff wants to use their personal computer to surf the web, do work online, or anything like that, they first have to take it to the IT department so they can basically look through it to make sure there's nothing "malicious" on it. We have to have stuff checked once a month each semester we're going to use personal computers.

Kinda pisses me off because there was nothing that happened to warrant this.

Yeah, I actually went back to look for context but I gave up after about two pages of chasing posts because I'm a lazy fuck. Smile

Yeah, hard to believe for those of us who grew up with the Funimation english dub, which watered down dialogue and personalities from the original Japanese version, but it's true.

Actually I've only read the manga.

I feel sorry for anyone there who doesn't like the idea of someone looking through their personal files.

"Malicious"? Like spyware, trojans, viruses?

That's ridiculous. There are things I'd rather not have random assholes looking at, thanks.

So what other option do you have? If you want to use the internet, you have to use one of the public computers at school? That's just crazy.

I hope I never accidentally enroll at a college that has a policy to invade people's privacy for essentially no reason.

You can't really GIVE virginity, it's more of a possession.
