[OOG] [OT] Marble Hornets Video Game ideas
Ideas for a game that will never be made probably!

Made a new thread because we're sort of cluttering up the Off Topic thread.

Ideas for a Marble Hornets based video game:

-Free-roam around whatever fictional city the game takes place in. Some objectives can be activated by traveling to them, initiated by uncontrollable events, or by collecting items to activate a mission.

-Missions are based off of MH entries, but due to a short amount of story events in the actual series, there are some events that are not canon to the MH universe. However, everything still makes sense that it would happen within the MH universe, and no major plot elements are altered.

-Main gameplay is a first person view, with a handheld camera held in the hand of the player. View is NOT through the camera. Looking at the camera screen can show camera battery level, remaining tape and a minor amount of distortion detection.

-Proximity to The Operator can cause a small amount of distortion viewable on the camera screen, however to see true distortion and detect proximity, you must play back the tape on the camera. This is done in real-time however, and can leave you open to danger.

-Enemies come in the form of The Operator himself, and proxies. In MH, the proxies are masked characters. Combat will be through flashlights, knives and improvised melee weapons, but you cannot kill the characters for story reasons, only ward them off.

-Health comes in two forms. Mental Stability and Sickness
-Mental Stability is how sane the character is. As you witness strange
events, get attacked by a proxy, moved by The Operator, teleport, etc.,
you will lose mental stability. This will cause blurred vision, player-screen
shaking, loss of control, and you may hear or see things that aren't really there.
-Sickness is caused by proximity to The Operator, which can cause coughing fits
(shakes the player-screen), blurred vision, minor loss of control, and in its
final stage, seizures or fainting.
Both will recharge slowly during main play.

-If you faint, or come into direct contact with The Operator, you will be teleported to a point in the area, and some things may be changed. If you are killed by a proxy, you will restart from a checkpoint.

-You need to collect batteries to power your flashlight and your camera. If your camera runs out of batteries, you can't record or have real-time Operator detection. If your flashlight dies, you're pretty much screwed in the dark.

-Tapes need to be collected for the camera. Without tapes, you can't record things, which will prevent you from doing in-depth Operator detection, or let you go over footage later.

-Pills can temporarially restore mental stability and ward of sickness. The effect wears off eventually.

-Messages from totheark may be found in the form of notes, tapes or discs.

-In between missions, you can move about the city, or stay at Jay's current location. Depending on the stage of the game, this can be a house, apartment, hotel room, or car. At "home" you can:
-Sleep, which will quickly restore mental stability and help against sickness, or
give you dreams which may provide hints towards the game.
-Check your auto-updated blog, which is like your journal in the Elder Scrolls series.
"Viewers" will respond occasionally, which can provide you with optional hints. Or
-Check for totheark messages, which may provide new missions, objectives or hints.
-Watch TTA discs.
-Go over footage you've recorded. A "tab" system will help you jump to important
events you recorded.
-Go over important items you've collected.

-If totheark sends you a message, you can use in-game "software", where you will play some sort of puzzle to decode TTA videos, which may provide additional hints, or start new missions/objectives.

-Your cellphone provides a map during free-roam segments. Occasionally, characters may call you to provide updates, new objectives, start missions or provide hints.

-Over the course of the game, you will earn upgrades to your camera. These include:
-Increased battery storage.
-Increased tape storage.
-Night vision.
-Camera-mounted flashlight.
-Easier real-time Operator detection.
-Digital storage, which requires no tape changing, but has limited storage
and you can't switch storage mediums.
-A second, chest-mounted camera, with compeltely digital storage. Used for
plot reasons, and provides no gameplay benifits.

-Throughout the game, you are collecting tapes to advance the plot or provide hints. Early on in the game, you start out with a number of original Marble Hornets tapes, that you study, and then you find more. There are, however, many tapes that don't do much for the game's story, but finding them all can let you piece together the entire Marble Hornets film.

-Drawings and certain environmental items serve as collectibles which allow access to bonus features once you finish the game. (See below)

-Later in the game, changing locations frequently becomes crucial. The longer you stay in one area, the more paranoid you will get, hurting mental stability.

-Post-game bonus features
-All original live-action MH entries.
-Usermade videos, parodies or otherwise.
-Concept art for the game.
-Behind the scenes videos for development and voice recording.
-Concept art and scripts for the original entries.
-Unfiction-inspired parody missions (no porn ones).
-Deleted or unfilmed entries from the series turned into bonus missions.

Want it... So... Much... Maybe if we flesh out an idea, you could send it to Frictional Games.

Well, they'd need approval and help from Troy and Joseph of course. Wink

Then again, Troy and Tim didn't seem to care too much for Amnesia...

Oh my, I want to play that game RIGHT NOW I'm not even joking

That whole Mental Stability concept flashed me right back to Eternal Darkness, when I thought my TV switched off, and it flashed back on when I was getting up to check - I still can't play that game. Not even in broad daylight.

I love it!

Additional thought: If Alex and Jay ever become a better duo than they have been recently, that could make for some killer co-op missions, where players have to work together.

Also, there should be environmental puzzles, especially portal-doors.

If we ever figure out what the damn Operator symbol is for, it could be a useful gameplay element.

Additional Post-Game Bonuses:

- Troy and Joseph LP the game
- Unlock Alternate Character: Rocky the Dog.
- Unlock Alternate Character: El Hombre Alto (same as operator, but with a moustache)
- Unlock UFTheory Mode: All characters are Brian (except Brian, who is Seth).

The LP would have to include Tim too. It could also have an in-game commentary system like Valve does for their games.

Also, is Rocky an appearing character or are you suggesting the player plays Rocky? Cause lolhow.

El Hombre Alto must have a sombrero too.

Additional UFTheory modes:
-All characters have bracelets.
-Alex wears six bracelets and a watch.
-The Operator reguarly switches between black and red ties.
-Tim always has a large rock with him, even during the pre-Masky interview.

This might interest you guys. I did a fair amount of screwing around with it a few years back, it's pretty easy to use and you can make decent games with it.
(Don't be fooled by the "RPG" part of the title either, I once made a story-driven adventure game out of it, with minimal RPG aspects.)

I have RPG Maker XP (I totally didn't pirate it), but sadly, I'm too impatient for its learning curve, or to design graphics. I guess I'm only good as the basic gameplay design guy Razz

Plus, the current design is for a 3D first person perspective. But surely, there are programs to do that to...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Also, I hate to be a spelling Nazi, but MorbidPuppies, you keep saying "defiantly". It's "definitely". Don't hate me.

http://rpgmaker2000.narod.ru/ this one is free, and there is still a lot of stuff out there for it. I was going to suggest it as well, but by the time I finished registering Magyk beat me to it

I don't, I definitely didn't notice I was spelling it wrong, thanks for pointing it out.

A good possible style to make it is like Fallout 1 and 2, with the interface and such. An MH game definitely seems like an RPG style game with horror elements thrown in

Eh, besides camera upgrades and stuff, how RPG-y can you really get with this?

It's not like Jay is out there jumping repeatedly to level up his Acrobatics skill.

Or maybe he is....We've wondered what he does with his free time. Good god.
