In-Game Branding?

I was wondering what people's feelings are about in-game branding? for example, the Fox copyrighting on the emails from Weyland Industries, and the prominence of Lionsgate branding on some of Hunger Games content.

Seems to me that its on the increase, and I get the feeling that it's not as a big a deal as it used to be? Strictly speaking, isn't it a fairly strong break with TINAG? Or do you not find it that disruptive?

When it's based on a movie/tv show, we know where it's coming from, and the corporations have to protect their copyright. So the presence of the branding isn't so bad.

To me, TINAG is about keeping the illusion of "real" for the characters, don't break that. I can suspend my non-fiction sensibility and keep up the charade even when I know this is being run by a puppetmaster.

It only starts to annoy me when it's obviously not a movie/game/whatever advertising game.

Sorry for insanely long break from this thread, I suffered a serious case of laptop death :'( all is well now though I'm in possession of a shiny new one!

So, it's more irritating if its a standalone game that includes branding? I definitely get that, if its already a promotional ARG anyway you kind of expect there to be more of an element of branding/advertising in there by its very nature.

I've had a lot of people talking to me about 'brand ownership' as well (in a purely academic sense, I'm not a marketer by trade!) I dunno if playing an ARG makes players feel particularly personally invested in the brand/show/movie its promoting? That seems to be the theory but I certainly didn't feel that way with Super 8 :S
