identifying other images in the picture...

first off, street artist visual narcotics 20mg has been displaying his art around in art exhibits and sells stickers that could be posted anywhere by anyone. so it sounded like a deadend at first in finding the city. but, he moved from chicago to los angeles, so either city is plausible.

the tablet pill in the message #2 photo can be seen here, dated july 2011: http://www.flickr.com/photos/twentymg/5967658902/in/photostream
by then i'd assume he'd be in los angeles when that round tablet pill was circulating.

+

on the side i've been looking up bacon tags. more of the elaborate ones are in toronto and other cities or countries, but then came across this article on laist with the same basic handwriting (the article sounds like a clueless guess on the bacon tagger):
http://laist.com/2010/02/22/las_bacon_fascination_penetrates_ta.php

so, clues have converged to los angeles as a possible location of that photo.

Very nice! And the hand writing for the bacon tags are identical. I think we can rule that one to be in LA for sure.

New guy here, On the subject on the LA/New York images. They are labeled Message #1, Message #2, etc... Has anyone tried to use stenography software on these yet? Could be they hide the message in the image. Just a thought.

Is there a way to download the images from Flickr other then taking a screen shot?

for over a year now i've been having issues with flickr either hanging for awhile or never letting me use the pulldown menu for 'actions' or allowing me to download the original image, when the owner has set the public to do so...

so, i've found a shortcut trick for downloading downloadable images:

using this as an example:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79477252@N03/7310436792/in/photostream

replace '/in/photostream/' with '/sizes/l/in/photostream/' on that url. on that modified url string, you can pick the original image size or allowable max size the owner has set in their permissions:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79477252@N03/7310436792/sizes/l/in/photostream/

to be more specific, flickr assigns single letters to sizes.

in this case, replace the 'l' in the above example string with a 'k' for its largest image.

in flickr the max size varies depending on the actual size of the image uploaded and the permissions to what size the owner lets to be downloaded. so, your mileage will vary. if 'l' didn't work, another letter designating a smaller size might -unless the owner doesn't want downloads of the image.

steganography:
i doubt these are stegged, but you might be able to check for metadata clues.

if they are in fact stegged, which algorithm and which program to use would be of concern since every method has differences and especially different signatures of detection. and, we might have a nudge from the puzzlemakers in going down that path if there were.

I would highly doubt steganography as well, otherwise they would have likely given us the tool for that as well.

I hadn't noticed the sound before but if you go to the top of the daybreak2012 page where the Arthur C. Clarke quote is there is a tone (528Hz???) droning behind the sound of the wind.

Yes, definitely 528 in the analyzer. I sent in my info for a sticker hopefully will get it soon.

yes, it's the ogg file mentioned in a spoiler tag. the sounds activate depending where you are on the page. for instance, if you at the jackboxer part at the very bottom, music_16609.ogg plays.

what's also really cool is how they used many static images (97 jpegs) as an animation for the scenery when you scroll up and down, and the birds flying(png images). it's a very sophisticated-ly designed website.

all the sounds on the daybreak site page:

site code spoils/hints number of upcoming content for every episode & an associated quote. unlike other args, i should probably not look as deep into the code, so i can enjoy the game & story unfold on its own. hmmm :-/

Crunching my way through the audio spectrum trying to map out the responsive frequencies.

It appears that the frequency analyzer will 'snap' to a given frequency if presented with a tone within a certain range of the designated frequency. I'm not sure what the tolerance range is, I haven't been paying attention.

FYI: It does appear that some characters are keyed to multiple frequencies. (duplicates are L, O, and T. However one of those O's may be zero, it's hard to tell)

good idea with listing the frequency associations, merana33.

notice there's two frequency ranges discovered for 'L' in the video. in my notes i got 831hz & 1046hz as what was displayed.

and, strangely enough, the 'H' mr. toasty and i got last week is now decoded into an 'L'. also, the 'W' is now an 'F'. either some sort of error & coincidence played a part last week, or something changed.

so,

- it might mean the decoding isn't necessarily 1 frequency per character. but so far, an 'H' frequency hasn't been discovered in that frequency range of 'L' and why it appeared then.

- if exact numbers are used to find puzzle answers, we might have to try the range said frequency since we could be off by only 1 or 2hz increments.

The frequencies I marked down are the 'ideal' frequencies that the analyzer seems to snap to (and notates on the screen). If you're too high or low for a given character it will usually snap up or down to the next frequency that's associated with a character. The character or symbol will show up in the point cloud field display, but the farther away you are from the target frequency, the fuzzier it becomes. The solids don't show up in the terminal log or the text output field, but they do snap like the others.

There are some frequency bands that don't appear to have any characters, so I may have missed some by stepping past them, but the analyzer seemed pretty good about jumping to the next one.

fine tuning:
using http://onlinetonegenerator.com/ you can find the range for each character so that we don't potentially miss anything between the Hz ranges.

for example, i did this range based on the first character 0:53 into the video from the link pdf. there is no 'H' in the vicinity, as what we previously discovered. 3 and 'K' surround the 'L'.

762 - 804Hz = 3
displays 784Hz onscreen

805Hz - 853Hz = L
displays 831Hz onscreen

854Hz - 907Hz = K
displays 880Hz onscreen
