I alwys found discussions of this sort to be rather pointless. At a fundamental level it can't be proved what is real and what is not. But in order to function in the world we have to have some base assumptions, or we'd spend the rest of our short lives sitting in a corner contemplating reality whilst our heads slowly disappeared up our own back-ends!

I read an article in the July or August issue of Scientific American that touched on the subject of reality from a very technical stand-point. I can't even pretend to explain it to any justice, so i'll leave it to those of you who are curious enough to follow these simple instructions:
