Who is the average ARG player? Male/Female, age etc.

Hi there,

I'm in the very early stages of planning a transmedia story/game. I come to this from a writing background, but came up with an idea that I 'think' lends itself to this form. It would be very useful to know what kind of people get involved in these games?

I'm particularly interested in the gender split, is it mainly male like other kinds of gaming? Or is it 50/50?

Would appreciate any help. Smile

It really depends on the project -- I seem to recall the creators of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries mentioning their audience base is almost entirely female (as they're working with a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice).

The data I've seen on ARG-specific sites shows a slight skew towards men in the younger (under 35) age brackets: by way of example, Quantcast shows a 64/36 split for Unfiction. However, that isn't nearly as much of a skew as you'd see with "traditional" video gaming sites (Kotaku, for instance, shows up with a mind-boggling 95/5 split that almost makes you wonder if they're being intentionally antagonistic).

Short answer: we're pretty similar to any other (extremely nerdy) slice of the internet.
