Concerning Originality.

I have read that a lack of originality is one of the worst thing possible in a story about Slenderman.

People have broken off the mold of "Average person getting stalked and drove crazy" very uniquely, an example would be Reach from WAYITD or The Messenger from DSTM.

That right there struck me as brilliant, to me, a story about being one of Slendy's henchman would come off a a joke. But they really surprised me with something, a story that was different from the rest.

But what more can be done?

I was thinking of possible ideas for a potential story but all have been done before and i'm afraid of being unoriginal. Of being just "another" one instead of an exceptional work.

But keep in mind, just like cliché's, something entirely unoriginal can be VERY good, and an original work could turn out very bad.

The point i'm trying to convey though is, what more can be done, everyone wants originality but it seems a lot of people are just stumped and i'm afraid that we'd be stuck in a mold again.

Just a little thought I wanted to share.

Kind of reminds me of how people either Love or Hate Prometheus for its plot and connections to Alien.

Speaking of originality, I think I've seen this thread before...

Beginning any story with a desire to be original is going to lead you into trouble sooner rather than later. Stories are compelling because they have an internal integrity, emotional consistency and respect for their characters and for their audience. Originality will come when you tell an honest story, not by coming up with a big-picture idea that no-one has ever had before.

Consider Tribe Twelve. It began as a conscious imitation of Marble Hornets, but because Adam is a natural storyteller, it quickly became its own thing. The story is unique because the storyteller is unique, and his perspective, proclivities and personality (damn alliteration) transformed the story into something that no-one else could tell.

I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't value originality, but originality should arise organically from your story, rather than being the first bullet-point on your story outline. That's not to say I want more white-text-caption series full of Operator symbols and video distortion, but there are ways to take those tropes, treat them honestly, and come to awesome new stories.

Surprised

Do tell. Did it arrive to a conclusion?

Illuminant, good point. Very good point. I never thought of that, I sort of lack imagination.

To me, it doesn't matter what you do, it's how you do it.
