Tungsten

Just thought I'd throw this out there to you guys and see what comes of it.

http://tungstencitycouncil.yolasite.com/

Looks like a City Council site for some futuristic sort of city. There's a list of council members, two of which have twitter accounts, one with an email address.

The main page links here: http://lafontaineindustries.yolasite.com/

Could be interesting. I'll email those with contact info and see where it goes from there.

There is also a blog:
http://chair-l-nielson.blogspot.ca/
that was tweeted by Amadeus LaFontaine

PS I also sent an email inquiry to the 'Private Investigator' who was listed the email went like this:
Quote:

Thank you for you interest in my services, Deni.
As far as what I offer, I'm willing to take care of just about anything that needs doing, within the constraints of the law. I realize that local police tend to turn a blind eye to illegal activities much of the time but I suppose that's to be expected, considering who we have in office. You didn't hear that from me, though. I'm only able to work within the city of Tungsten, becauss the paperwork required to leave the city is expensive and time-consuming, and the border guards get suspiciousif a person travels too often.
And pricing... Well, depending on what it is that needs doing, I generally only charge to cever my expenses for the duration of the investigation and enough to cover my rent.
So, what can I help you with?

-Sam Marconi, PI

Hello Mr. Marconi,

I was just curious as to what your price range was on your work and what services you offer?

Deni

I also emailed asking about immigration and got:

GOV.AML-FSPLATnull.net

Deni,

Goverrnor LaFontaine is away from his desk at the moment and unable to answer questions, so please allow me to do so in his place.

Tungsten City immigration policies dictate that, before moving to the city, a person must get into contact with the Department of Transportation, preferably through the corresponding branch of their home city's government. They should be able to provide you with all necessary paperwork and information, and also connect you with a reepresentative of our city's Department of Family and Support Services to help you begin looking for a home. Upon arrival in the city, there will be a minimal amount of paperwork that will need to be filled out at the DFSS building in person, and after six month in the city you will be expected to take a short, simple test to finalize your citizenship.

Tungsten City is, most definitely, an interesting place to live, and we offer fantastic educational and employment opportunities. Should you decide to immigrate to our city, you should see about seeking employment with LaFontaine Industries, Tungsten City's largest and most successful company.

Thank you for your interest,

-Secretary Theresa Lowell

Hello,

I was just curious as to what a person would have to do to become a citizen of Tungsten City, it seems like a very interesting place to consider moving to.

Deni

Have any of you taken a stab at the Challenge on the Tungsten Tribune tumblr page? http://tungsten-city-pr.tumblr.com/post/22264613480/a-challenge
I did the Sudoku puzzle (I was bored) but I'm stuck figuring out what the code (I assume it's a code) is underneath it:
Code:
(1,9) + (3,8) | (2,1) | (5,5) | (9,3) + (6,5) + (7,1) | (4,1) + (9,2) + (8,9) | (6,8) + (9,8) + (3,2) + (2,8) | (4,1) + (9,2) + (8,9) | (6,8) + (9,8) + (3,2) + (2,8) | (4,6) | (4,5) + (3,4) | (6,7) + (2,7) + (1,4) + (5,3) +(3,6) | (9,6) + (7,5) |

(2,1,3) | (4,1,3) | (5,2,3) | (7,1,10) | (5,4,6) | (8,2,4) |

.. …. | … .. | .. .. |
KwLFl

The first part looks like it definitely corresponds with the Sudoku puzzle itself (e.g: (1,9) corresponds to the number in row 1 col 9 of the solved puzzle), but I am failing to see how to go from that to the rest of the code -- when it goes into 3-tuples and then the dots and the letters.

This reminds me of coordinates from math (which I had a long time ago... Very Happy) Arrow (x,y)
(I think this was the way to write coordinates, or isn't it so?? Confused )

So that would mean it would be like this:
(never mind I'm not finished with the Sudoku, I just started and I'm not that great Sudoku solver... Very Happy )

Then you get 11 Numbers, aparted by the symbol "|" (the first sequence of the code).
In the second one, with 3 numbers there is also a 10, maybe you have to put that numbers (1 till 11) you got from the sudoku in the "triplets", then maybe it shows something in a 3d coordinate system, or maybe something else... I don't know yet, I will first finish that damn Sudo-cow! Razz

Edit:
solved the sudoku!
So the coordinates would be this numbers:

Code:
12 | 1 | 6 | 15 | 14 | 20 | 14 | 20 | 1 | 9 | 14 | 5 |

What I also saw is, that the fifth and the sixth "coordinate calculation" are repeatet Arrow
Code:
 [...]| (4,1) + (9,2) + (8,9) | (6,8) + (9,8) + (3,2) + (2,8) | (4,1) + (9,2) + (8,9) | (6,8) + (9,8) + (3,2) + (2,8) |[...]

So I don't know why this two numbers appear twice!?

Your answer is to close to one of the characters to be co-incidence:

12 1 6 15 14 20 14 20 1 9 14 5

L A F O N T N T A I N E

Amadeus Marco LaFontaine

I double checked your math, and get the same results. Are there multiple ways to solve the same Sudoku? Or is it a typo?

I emailed the city because there are so many titles that do not have emails and limited details about the city. I received info back
what I wrote
Quote:
Subject: DOT
There is no way for me to contact our Department O Transportation here in Tungsten.
I am over here in district 7. A pipe burst in the street and has washed away the road creating a big hole that has now taken a street light as well.
Care to send somebody out here? This is on the nicer side of town so I expect more.

Their response
Quote:
Sorry, but what?
....Are you trying to prank the city council, man? Cuz if you are you're doing it poorly.
I think, living here all my life, I know better than to think "district 7" is a real place.
If you're gonna try and pull something like this, learn a little about the city first, buddy.
Actually, here, let me help you. At least this way, if you try this again, it can at least look like a legitimate thing and Marco won't be all pissed off about some dumb kid trying to trick him.
There are five districts in Tungsten: North, South, East, West, and City Center.
West District is where the old mines were and where Tungsten was founded. The old mines are the dump and the water reclaimation plant now.
North District is where the new mine is, and that's where all the miners' housing is.
East District is the swanky, high-class district where all the rich folks live.
South District is middle-class housing.
City Center is where LaFontaine Industries is and has most of the city's bars, casinos, brothels, and the like.

Hope you learned something.

-L. Nielson

Nice find!
No I checked it, the sudoku has only one way to solve (checked that with an onlne sudoku solver), so I think it is a typo or maybe just a co-incidence...but that would be rather crazy! Surprised

Anyway, I'll add my solved Sudoku, maybe you got other numbers!?

Oh no. Your solve, you did the heavy lifting, I was just confirming Smile

Sudoku solve is the same, in retrospect if there were multiple solves, changing one box would change many others. Just don't see how to get to 1 (=a) by adding (at least) 1+1+1.

The other puzzles remain a mystery to me.

(2,1,3) | (4,1,3) | (5,2,3) | (7,1,10) | (5,4,6) | (8,2,4) |

Before the Challenge entry, their tumblr feed had a short article about the health benefits of tea. What struck me at the time was that some of their bullet items are falsehoods. Now that I see the numbers in triplets under the Sudoku going up as far as ten, perhaps this is the true purpose of the tea post: to be a book cipher of sorts. I'll look at that shortly. Here are the items and my feelings about which ones are not true:
  1. Tea contains antioxidants. (TRUE)
  2. Tea has less caffeine than coffee. (not really, but it depends)
  3. Tea may reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. (possibly)
  4. Tea protects your bones. (possibly due to added milk)
  5. Tea can whiten your smile. (FALSE, just ask my dentist)
  6. Tea bolsters your immune system. (TRUE)
  7. Tea keeps you hydrated. (true, within moderation)
  8. Tea is calorie-free. (TRUE, assuming nothing is added)
  9. Tea increases your metabolism. (true, but so does black coffee)
  10. Tea helps defend against cancer. (TRUE)

I can't see any good cipher to account for (7,1,10) since the 10th line has neither a 7th word nor a word of 7 letters long.

Looks like there was a hint posted on the Tribune blog about that puzzle.

Thank you for the hint! We here at the Tungsten Tribune have been trying to figure your puzzle out as well!

I know, double post, meh...

Anywho, I was playing with morse code, as well, and got "3mm." Maybe that's a fluke and I have no idea how to use a morse translator, but still worth mentioning. I tried it with the |'s and got "3". I substituted the bolder dots with dashes and the lighter dots (periods) with periods.

I'll be playing with the odd combination of numbers for a bit whilst I work to see what I can come up with.

EDIT - Did anyone notice the date format for Tungsten? "D14M53K17" appears to be "Day 14, Month 5, [year]3 k [thousand] 17" which could mean it's set in the future? It's May 14, 3017, 1005 years from now.

Doesn't really look like morse code to me...
Wait a second. It's only where there's three dots in a row that it isn't bolded. Maybe they wrote it in a word processor initially and it turned all of the 3-dot segments into elipses? I think it's just supposed to be dots, and not morse. Is there any kind of code that's just dots?
