I don't see how the red tower or the apartment fire could be considered red herrings. One concealed an important clue and the other demonstrated totheark's wrath.

Wait, why are we saying it was totheark's wrath, concerning the fire?

The red tower has always bothered me. Sure, it looks creepy, but there's no reason to think that it would summon the operator in Entry #5, just because Jay was filing it. (The symbols were far too small to see at that resolution.) This could suggest that someone else was filming it (totheark?) which summoned the operator and caused the audio distortion. Otherwise the tower doesn't really fit in with anything, it was just a convenient landmark where totheark could leave a tape. Given that it forwards the plot it can't really be called a red herring, but even so it does sit a bit awkwardly with everything else.

(By the way I'm in favour of keeping this thread separate, and having other threads like it. I think it encourages more productive discussion if we don't force everyone to pigeonhole their thoughts into an entry thread. This board certainly would benefit from a good balance of entry oriented threads and more general threads that transcend the entries.)

Jay also woke up near the red tower after his blackout during enttry 37's upload. I was surprised it got brought up again on Twitter but Jay never mentioned it in the videos.

It was right after totheark posted that video on Jay's account that said "I am coming for you." Way I see it, ol' Toothy Arc went on down to Jay's apartment to snatch him up shortly thereafter, found that Jay had flown the coop, got angry, and just started lighting everything on fire.

I kind of disagree with that for two reasons:

1) Totheark videos always associate themselves with water, not so much fire; The Operator is the fire guy, and Totheark and The Operator have never really been given a credible alliance, only things that seem to put them at odds.

2) Totheark never mentions anything of the sort after the fact; he has no trouble mocking characters. Seems like he'd say SOMETHING about having burned down Jay's apartment.

Eh, I'd say if there's any theme that's consistent with all of totheark's entries it's the theme of disjointed imagery. I mean we're talking about the same mind that opened his "I filmed you sleeping!" entry with a dog lung being respirated by science, so I wouldn't say he/they/it puts that much thought into consitency.

He's never really direct in what he says either. From a sort of meta-gamey standpoint, I feel like Jay leaving his house due to totheark threatening to come for him being directly followed by Jay's apartment burning down has pretty strong implications as to the identity of the arsonist.

On the contrary, Totheark is very consistent in the way it uses laconic language and tends to repeat phrases ("secrets," "always watching," "waiting for you/awaiting your arrival/whatever," various phrases of command like "stay," "do not fail"). There's also the recurring theme of melodies and whatnot. So I'd say if Totheark wants to behave/act rationally, it's capable of doing so.

This, I can kind of get behind. I see what you mean after going back and watching Entry ###### and, before that, Totheark's "Warning" video. Increasing impatience that leads to a break and an apparent threat. Especially stuff like "Stay Home" and "Be Alone."

Still, the visual tear that takes place in the video of the fire report (#25) makes me think more and more that The Operator is responsible (I'm inclined to attribute distortion effects to a nearby Operator than to maskies, just because otherwise the distortions would be incredibly inconsistent). Some of the things Totheark posts in Entry ###### are open to interpretation ("Control is being taken away from you") and could be interpreted as a warning to Jay to be careful rather than a threat. Also, Masky at least has shown some motivation to "help" Jay, whether that's accidentally or not. I don't really see him just burning down a building for the fuck of it, and if that's the case, the fact that it doesn't really happen again, with all the times that Jay's moved around, seems to discredit the possibility.

And still, the silence. If Totheark got opsdkfopsdfkopsdk enough to burn down a building, does he just cool down after that and shut up for over a year? No gloating or "JAY I REALLY MAD NOW"?

But I see your point, and could buy that Totheark did it now, even though I wouldn't really say for sure. Still leaning towards Operator.

Back to the topic though, for before: Yeah, the series isn't over yet, but we have had major defining plot points, so red herrings could be around. For example, in Entry #35, we had it confirmed that Tim was the man behind the Masky. So any evidence pointing to someone else being Masky would be out the window. Things like that.

The visual tear in Entry #25 could be a red herring, considering this line of thought. Bleh.
