Back to Alex's own goals and the Operator's goals, I start to think maybe Alex gave in to the Operator so easily because he might have realized they have very similar goals. To explain that, I should maybe first go back to what I assume the Operator's goals might be:

What brought me to the theory is that whenever TO gets somebody in his hands, he doesn't seem to want to kill him/her. All people falling into his hands turn out to be still alive but with memory loss (for example Tim and Jay) - sometimes after becoming his puppets for a while - or we just don't know what happened to them (for example Brian). And even for the latter we assume they might still be alive and be behind TTA. We have no single confirmed kill of Slendy (unless you count what Alex did in his rage). He only invokes amnesia, and I guess that's exactly what he wants: To make people forget. And more precise: To make people forget about him. Sounds strange at first considering how TO stalks people and therefore causes them to see him on an on. But he just seems to do that with people having memories and/or evidence of him. We have several cases of people forgetting about him and not being followed by him anymore thanks to that. See Tim, for example. If TO could talk, he would probably permanently try to tell us to destroy the tapes.
That would also fit to TO distorting cameras. He doesn't want to be documented. (Though I must admit he sucks at preventing that. Razz )

Maybe Alex found out about that after a while. So in order to end the horror, he wanted to get rid of everybody who has seen TO knowingly or unknowingly (see for example Entry #12)- which is pretty much everbody involved in MH. Maybe this is why Alex acted this way, why he wanted to burn the tapes and why he "gave" the one tape to TO (he put it into the tower to demonstrate he doesn't want to keep any proof of him, like "Here, have it back."). Maybe that's why he didn't make sure his victims were dead - they don't have to die. They just have to lie there unable to run from their brainwashing session. Maybe he was so calm at end of season 1 because he thought he succeeded and therefore got rid of TO. Or at least passed the problem to Jay. Maybe Alex even let TO brainwash him and actually forgot about him. But when his girlfriend screamed, it all came back to him. And he noticed what a big mistake it was to let Jay keep the tapes, therefore he contacts him and shows him what the tapes are capable of. He just experienced how even one little tape can bring TO back, so he had to take care of the other tapes after all.

This would also explain his rage about Jay posting the tapes online. If this whole theory turns out to be true, Jay did the worst thing one could ever do. Posting the evidence online causes millions of people to see TO and makes it pretty much impossible to ever end this whole problem, unless each and every viewer (that means us! Shocked) gets brainwashed by TO. [You didn't want to sleep this night anyway, did you? Razz]
So in their despair, Alex and TO become more and more aggressive.
Now when Alex goes to TO in Entry #42, he probably does it because he doesn't know how to end this anymore on his own, and as he and TO have pretty much the same goal. He accepts becoming his tool (maybe he even did that several times before this event) in order o reach a common goal - to stop Jay and to make everybody forget about TO. Furthermore in order to end it he also needs to forget about everything himself, so he actually needs a brainwashing session.
[Additionally to that, he might also think he might get Amy back once TO has reached his goal.]

PS: I'm guess some parts of this theory have surely been brought up before, but as I'm new I just explained everything being relevant for the theory to make sure.

wow... that's actually a pretty good theory. Alex doesn't want anyone he knows to remember the operator so Alex doesn't accidentally see him again. He thought he succeeded a few times, and let operator wipe his memory (everyone is gone scene makes more sense, "I'm the only one left, thought I would be safe, I'm going home"). However in present time all of this memory wiping and excessive operator exposure caused him to go crazy and kill bruce in the tunnel, and try to kill jay and jessica.

I think it's odd that Alex hasn't shown up in nine months or so though. He's still alive, judging from TTAs videos, but he's making no visible attempts to stop Jay or anyone anymore.

Well that's assuming that Alex is looking at Jay's YouTube/Twitter still. As far as we know Alex is living under a bridge killing homeless people with rocks, without underwear and only one shoe, I.E. he might not have internet access. And that's assuming he's sane enough to use a computer at this point. Or that he hasn't died since totheark posted Decay. Or that totheark knew Alex was alive when he posted Decay, or if he was just guessing (He does know though Alex didn't die in Entry #52, since he kept working with Masky a little while after that and Masky was would know.)

Waiting for that one entry where we see Alex scrapping for a sandwich with some hobos and then TO appears, screen distortion cut to Alex eating a sandwich menacingly while staring at something off screen.

Next troyhasacamera video right here, "Alex eats a sandwich".

Though back on topic, I was just thinking, if totheark is more then one person, maybe the reason hoody is mad at Tim is because he abandoned his masky role. So he got Jay those medical records to get Tim back in the game. Since Tim is aware of marblehornets as we know it now, he may see the documents, get pissed, and revert to masky mode? I don't know something like that. It would explain why they were helping each other attack alex and are now on some kind of opposing sides.

I doubt Masky switched back to Tim on purpose. I think it's just something he generally does.

So I have a random theory. Okay, so assuming Tim doesn't remember going to the abandoned hospital with Alex, or being Masky, we must consider this: Does Masky remember going to the abandoned hospital with Alex as Tim? I mean I presume that's why he wants to get revenge on Alex (Ya' know, with the stabbing him and everything.)

So here's my theory: What if other crap happened to Tim at the hospital with the Operator. Things that would drive a person crazy. Tim went completely batshit insane at the hospital. But now those memories are gone, so he's back to normal. But what if the Operator doesn't erase your memories, what if he just suppresses them? Remember Jessica, she still had remnants of memories about Jay's name, and more specifically Tim was still anxious about the hospital when Jay took him there even though he didn't specifically remember what happened.

Okay, here's the main part of my theory. What if sometimes Tim's memories would resurface and he'd go batshit insane again. But then they'd go back away and he'd go back to normal, and he wouldn't retain memories of what he did when he was batshit. And then he'd go back to remembering and he'd go batshit again and remember what he did last time he was batshit. So basically he'd switch between remembering Alex is evil and being batshit insane, and not remembering Alex is evil but being normal. So when he was the former he'd be Masky, and when he was the latter he'd be Tim.

So ya, that's basically my theory. Not all that much evidence to support it, but it makes sense to me.

Like a loop of unhappiness...

I wonder if there has to be some type of trigger for Tim to remember everything that happened, or if it's just arbitrary. "Lala time to smoke my twenty cigarett--ZOMGWTFALEXISEVILTACKLLLLLLE"

Or something like that. XD

I dunno, DHawk. #19 and #33 kind of imply that Masky has more consistent and prolonged motivations than an intermittent memory of Alex's crime. Otherwise, I don't see why he would divert his attentions to Jay, or why he would feel a need to continue harassing Jay after Alex had either been dealt with or had escaped, maybe.

"Decay" established why totheark is harassing Jay when totheark obviously just wants to kill Alex. He thinks Jay will lead him to Alex. Since it's also been established Masky works with totheark, it stands to reason Masky is harassing Jay for the same reason.

It almost worked by the way, Alex sent Jay the tape with the return address to the that building where Alex was, Masky followed Jay there and stabbed Alex. He could've killed him if he wass better with a knife. It failed for obvious reasons, but totheark's plan actually is sensible. Jay's looking for Alex too after all.

Anyway, Tim was probably right, it probably is ultimately Alex's fault he's Masky. Also, Tim was good friends with Brain, and remember Tim was right there when whatever happened to Brain happened to him, and that was Alex's fault. And more recently Alex broke Masky's leg. My point is that Masky has plenty of reason to want revenge on Alex.

But don't forget, we have reason to believe that Totheark knows something that Jay doesn't, despite the former knowing the latter's capability of leading [Insert Totheark's Identification Here] to Alex. It seems that Totheark is trying to relay a message to Jay, a message that will probably give him input on the defeat of the Operator, if such a thing exists.

I'm wondering why, if Totheark knows such special secrets, he needs Jay. I wonder why he can't just handle it on his own.

Operator decoy. If something goes wrong, Jay's the one who gets his mind wiped. Totheark hasn't forgoten yet, remember? (See what I did there?) I don't think he's immune though, so I think the only reason why is that he's been able to manipulate others into doing his work for him.

Jay probably has some weird thing going on with him. He seems less affected by the operator than other people, though still affected. Each person seems to have a different response to him, Alex goes murderous, totheark gets all cryptic and shit and Jay he seems to take things in stride. He's scared of course but he doesn't seem to react to the operators presence as dramatically as the others do.

Except for staring blankly up at the ceiling, mouth agape, a la Entry #52 and "Return."
