Jon doesn't know what happened to Zar. Should we show him the video? How much do we tell him?

I think he needs to know. Can I show him the video? Tell him who Zar really was?

Has anyone drawn anything out of the Mordred Legends? I'll post them here for easy reading.

Quote:
The various tales of how Mordred was founded/created. There are other versions, which I may add later, but these are the most prominent ones. Many of the other tales share roughly the same information, however.

The Sun: The Mordred Party traveled down from Oklahoma, looking for a town to settle in. They came across a plain that was perfect, but no one was using it. There were settlements all around this area, clustered together. But no one would set foot on that particular stretch of land, saying that it was sacred. The Mordred Party, fools that they were, ignored the warnings and built houses on that cursed ground. The sun would never set, as it had no place to go- the empty field was where it slept each night. With the Mordred Party there, the sun had no place to go, so the sun had to remain in the sky. The sun grew furious with the Mordred Party and made them go insane with lack of sleep, one day blending into the next until it became a single day. The part of their bodies that needed rest and shade and darkness separated from them, and became the Shadows that inhabit this town. The occupants, being insane, pulled out their own eyes so that the sun could not shine in them anymore.

Brother Mordred: Roughly the same story, only the land was cursed, not sacred. The area where Mordred was to be founded was considered curse, as the Shadows already lived there. In order to settle there, the Brother Mordred, a pastor, made a deal with the Shadows. He would sacrifice his eye to show how much he wanted this area of land. However, Brother Mordred, true to his name, used an oxen's eye instead of his own and the Shadows grew furious and demanded sacrifices from all of the Mordred Party. In order to continue to live in this town, each resident must continue to sacrifice their eye in order to appease the Shadows who rule over this area of land.

"Demonic Hotspot": Mordred was founded on a "demonic hotspot" [sic]. The odd sensation of shadows on the edges of your vision, or sleep-induced hallucinations- rare occurrences in the rest of the world, but in Mordred, they were unnervingly common. Shadows danced on the edges of their vision, and their dreams were filled with visions of stick-figure men and wispy shadows. Brother Mordred had a vision: he should tear out his own eyes so that he could see the true forms of these shadows- by removing his earthly sight, he could then peer into realms not normally seen. In this way, they could prove to themselves that they were not insane, merely seeing other realms.

The first two are really neat stories, but the last seems closest to the truth (to me) because of Jon's problems with his eyes/vision in certain parts of Mordred and his contact with the shadows (maybe hallucinations?). Maybe there are aspects of each story that are true, or maybe the answer is "D. None of the above".

Does anyone see any immediate benefit in finding out the true story of the founding of Mordred?

Jon had to learn about Zardock eventually. I don't think you did anything wrong, not that there is really a right or wrong way to go about this.

Here's a theory:

So now he's a shadow and his new shadowname is HeWhoGrovels. That means SheWhoCreeps is also a shadow. And seeing how Zar might to some extent remain self aware it's not unlikely the rest of them do too. Meaning it's quite possible SheWhoCreeps is the shadow of Jane (or at least of Charlotte Parkins Gilman).

(And what if this is all due to her crazy, rather than some settlers cult)

More nice tie-ins:
Gilman was born on July 3, 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut, to Mary Perkins (formerly Mary Fitch Westcott) and Frederick Beecher Perkins. She had only one brother, Thomas Adie, who was fourteen months older, because a physician advised Mary Perkins that she might die if she bore other children. During Charlotte's infancy, her father moved out and abandoned his wife and children, leaving them in an impoverished state.

You didn't. There wouldn't come a time when he's reaction would be any different. He should know.

Now, how is our dark overlord doing? She still alive?

Edit: Can anyone else see the video Jon posted?

The second lyric seems to indicate that Jon, contrary to his sister, has decided to break this cycle of nastiness.

What if this ends up with the three of em just being dilusional and everything we know is just the way they see the world to make their delusions make sense

Zardock's twitter does link to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KaOrSuWZeM and one of the top comments is "The mind tries to find familiar patterns in randomness." which is a reply to "Why do I hear things in the white noise...children laughing, people talking, etc?"

The only benefit I see is if it can help us somehow defeat the shadows (okay, obviously). Since Zar doesn't seem to be completely "integrated" yet, there may be a way for us to save him and bring him back. Maybe the stories hold some kind of clue. I've been reading them over and over and I can't seem to find anything truly useful. Here are a few thoughts on each one of them:

The Sun: If the shadows really separated from the people and became what inhabit Mordred, why are they so eager to awaken shadows in the residents? What does that give them? Is it a plot to take over the entire town? If so, what benefit does getting eyes from an outsider give them?

Brother Mordred: If the residents must offer an eye to be able to live in the town, how does the whole thing with old residents' eyes wanting to return fit in? If it is really a sacrifice to the shadows so that one can be able to live in the town, why would residents who had already escaped feel the need to return to sacrifice their eye? They, presumably, do not want to live in the town.

Demonic Hotspot: First of all, why is this in quotation marks? What's up with the "[sic]"? Did Zardock find this somewhere else? If so, where and how do we find the original source? Also, in this story both eyes seem to be removed. That doesn't seem to be the practice now, in the case of most people it seems to be only a single eye. Therefore, I don't know if I believe this one although the "demonic hotspot" part does make sense to me.

Zar was incredibly protective about them, so they must be valuable in some way, although at the moment I fail to see how. I suppose eventually we will have to get Working on breaking the curse, and then we might need to know it's origins.
Right now, it seems all we can do is to wait for Char to get back, and if nothing else has happened by then I don't see why they shouldn't just get out of town quick as hell.

i agree, we really should get cracking on this curse thing.. is there any info on line about demonic hotspot curses and shutting them down? ( someone mentioned this seemed most likely) i can have a look through my paganism books and see whats said in there... i believe i remember reading about a demonic hotspot called pendle hill and the rituals performed there to cleanse it... perhaps along similar lines there is a cleansing ritual for mordred ..

i also agree that we need to see what char says.. n if she is actually char... remember the shaddow said she would be returned unharmed not uninhabited.....
