Discussion: what drives an ARG player?
Discussing motivations of ARG players and possible real-world applications of ARG game mechanics

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the ARG world, but I'm so intrigued by what's happening here that I've decided to write a paper on the subject for a research class.

I've done some fairly extensive perusing of the forums and started following a few of the games myself, and I am struck by the positive atmosphere of these forums. This seems to be the only public space on the internet that is almost 100% courteous and collaborative. I have so far seen no evidence of the usual plagues of the internet, flame posts and trolls.

This observation has led me to a couple of questions for all of you who have been doing this for a while, and I'd love to get a discussion going:

-What is it about ARGs in general and these forums in particular that fosters such a positive community? Is it just good moderation or is there some larger force at work?

-ARGs can potentially require a tremendous amount of time and effort on the part of the players, more so than most other types of games. What motivates you as a player to put in so much work when there is no tangible reward for you at the end of it?

-Under what circumstances, if any, would you be willing to volunteer the same sort of effort in a real-world problem-solving situation?

I really appreciate any input you guys have, and I will certainly share the paper with anyone interested when it's done.
