Also worth noting of U-Sq, the flagpole in the middle of the park, just north of where you've drawn the ship? Definitely an eagle topping that pole. That could also be the flying birdy, if U-Sq is indeed the final resting place.
I'm planning to go back during the week and the daytime, when there's less a chance of kids running around in there and when it's actually -open-. There is ONE stipulation I'll say of the park - adults are technically not supposed to enter the playground with a child...so yeah, I can see it now:
"Mommy, what's the guy doing in the sandbox?"
"I'm not sure dear, but it looks like he's digging."
"What's he digging for? China?"
"..."

If you do go exploring this week don't forget to check all the store fronts along the way for possible references to pirates, or a guy named Mulligan, or General Anesthetic Co. phone numbers. Also, double check all banks or storage lockers around the square as they are the most likely place to "bury" treasure. The pic below shows the extent of 250' radii around some key reference point in the square. Note the radius go right up to the store fronts on all sides of the park.

This picture may give some more insight to the depth of the area (this is the area in question, correct?)

Question: I see that there is a turtle and a frog in that sand pit. Is there any thing else near by that has anything to do with fish, the navy or water?

Re: uh oh

Something to keep in mind Scaling off a video closeup of the treasure chest I calculated the following approximate values:
Length --------- 18"
Width ---------- 12"
Height w/lid --- 16"
Volume --------- 3,456 in3 (2.0 ft3)
Weight w/coins - 208 lbs
The density of dirt is approx. 120 lbs/ft3 and the chest displaces 2.0 ft3 = 240 lbs. So in order to bury the treasure chest you have to cart a 208 lbs box to the site, dig a hole over 16 inches deep and then haul away, or somehow dispose of, 240 lbs of dirt.

Remember, the sandbox was opened about the time they buried it. Is is possible they never had to dig a hole in the first place?

Has anyone gone and checked the sandbox yet? I might be down in the city within the next month and could certainly dig around in Union Square. Hopefully it's a cold day and no little kids are around. I'll gladly share with DarkHuman but those ankle-biters aren't getting a cent! Though it could be fun to interest another generation in scavenger hunts. "see what you get when you follow clues? you too can one day be up to your ass in sand explaining puppet pirates to strangers!" Unless someone else has already gone and checked, in which case I'll save myself the trouble. Has anyone else gone and checked?

It's pouring rain tonight in the city - which means 0% chance of kiddies in the box in the mornin'. I'm heading back down there tomorrow with my best rat-pants and a spade to settle the debate of U-Sq.

I didn't end up making it down - my funds are meek, and I had to decide between eating for the rest of the week or investing $5.00 to go and check for potentially no return. I'll have a look after tomorrow, when I've a better head of steam to power me. Fear not - the nook shall be un-crannied!

I checked out the sandbox The first posted rule at NYC playgrounds is that you're not allowed in without a kid so I just kind of breezed in and then back out again really quickly (which I suppose might have looked even more suspicious). I didn't get a chance to dig because the place was packed full of kids and I couldn't figure out what I would say to get them to all go away. Soooooo I guess next time I'm down in the city (which won't be for weeks), I'll try to get there later at night when no kids are around. The rock in the middle of sandbox looks like like a really bent foot than like a boot-print. And there is a little turtle statue and a little frog statue next to it. And a metal pole that serves some purpose which I don't know.
