I responded to an inbox from DM with the code above, but he responded with "das ist nicht das, was ich gebeten hatte." which translated means "that's not what i asked". Maybe he is looking for Steve's actual name, so I'm going to send a reply with that. Can you send me the link to the video with DM's code? I looked on his channel feed and I didn't see it, so it must be one of those which are not published and only accessible through a direct message.

Der miesmacher sent me this. If you watch the shadow you'll see it's the guy in the hat. The comment translated says "proof, if proof be needed of".

There's distortion both when you see the shadow of the guy in the hat and even more when you see Steve on the phone. I'm not sure what kind of "secret" this is about Steve, though.

EDIT: After watching this a few times, I think this has to be the guy in the hat from the "secret" video DM sent you, Greg. I mean, he's wearing a hat. And a mask. WOMP WOMP proxy time?

Also, can anyone make out what's being said at 1:43??

EDIT 2: Am I just dumb, or what exactly is in the picture starting at 2:24? I know that must be Hat Man, but I think the distortion's messing with my head and I can't see a clear picture.

My take on the video:

Steve hears banging in his flat coming from Jack's room. He picks up the camera to start recording, you hear him say @ 0:34 "It's been going on for like... ten minutes now." Then the hatted man shows up.

Baronness, you are right about the hatted man. He's the same one we saw turn Steve's camera on in the middle of the night. He's the same one in DM's video that records Steve while he's on the phone. However, I don't think he's the same one in the last scene. You'll see that where he is standing in the flat is not the same door as the one Steve opens.

I don't think the distortion is messing with your head. We've seen the hatted man enough to know that this kind of video distortion doesn't happen when he shows up. He hasn't done anything malicious to Steve, either. Steve went to go grab a knife, then sees that thing on the other side and goes to open the door when he's attacked. It doesn't look like the hatted man. I can't really make him out, but we'd be able to see that familiar grey trenchcoat and hat if it were him. I think we're dealing with something new now.

Regarding the sound @ 1:43, I swear it sounds like something being played backwards. I'm at work so I don't have access to any type of audio editing software (or even YouTube, other than through my phone) so I can't check it myself just now. Something else I just though of - all of the language in der miesmacher's videos is backwards, too. If someone doesn't check it out before then, I'll try and mess with the audio tonight.

So apparently I suck at audio editing. I can't seem to get rid of the whine in the audio @ 1:43. But when messing with the reverse/forward I noticed that it plays something "forward", then it plays the exact same thing in reverse, then it repeats it. Forward again then reverse again. I can't make it out, though. Maybe someone else who knows Audacity could mess with it?

PRO-TIPS

For audio extraction:

MPEG Streamclip is a great bit of software for this sort of thing. Failing that, just connect your Audio Out port to your Audio In port and record it "live" into your wave editor.

For wave editing:

Audacity is pretty good for free stuff, but if you're willing to shell out, SoundStudio is relatively cheap and a very friendly, versatile and stable wave editor.

For audio filtering:

Use graphic equalisers and cut all frequencies outside the normal range of the thing you're trying to isolate.

EDIT: Wikipedia tells me the range of human voice is 300Hz to 3400Hz, so if you're just after a voice, you can comfortably cut anything outside that range, and then normalise the sound file.

Thanks to anothergreg I am jumping into this head first. Did some searching around google this morning and found a copuple things to note. Der Miesmacher has a twitter feed, and as of a few minutes ago has not tweeted anything. BUT, the tag line to his feed translated is:
"Not that stupid grin is not for you"

Also found the following in the same google search in definitions for Miesmacher.

Steve just emailed me. He hasn't heard from Der Miesmacher. He says he's going to the police.

Has anyone else heard from him lately?

Also, has anyone else been able to identify the songs in der miesmacher's videos? The Nameless pointed out to me that the song when stuff (feathers? hair?) is being dropped into the bin is "Spanish Flea". Maybe there's a pattern with the music?

I isolated the sound that Baronness mentioned at 1:43. I can't make out a message. It does go forward, backward, forward, backward, but it's just the same thing repeated when you manipulate the audio that way. Might just be a dead end. Anyway, thanks for the help with the audio/software recommendations everybody. It helped a lot.
