I think it's like, Slender Man will show up and do all these creepy things, but if you give him a 20 dollar bill he'll leave you alone.

I've read that it traces back to the original Something Awful thread where Slender Man was created. Victor Surge never received the $20 prize money for winning the Photoshop contest. The joke goes that Slender Man only stalks people because he's upset he never got the money, so giving him $20 calms him down.

No idea if that's how it really started. Could be BS.

You know what would suck? Is if the series finale of Marble Hornets was the Operator appearing and saying "Look, if you just give me twenty dollars, I'll go away." And they do, and he does.

It wasn't a competition. Just a "Hey guys, let's make some spooky art" thread, if I remember correctly. Surge posted something with Slenderman, and the whole thread slowly drifted towards making more

The $20 thing started with the video onetruepurple linked, I'm pretty sure.
