[Trailhead] Felicity's Legacy
Mysterious package & instructions

Ok, it's about time I posted something here about this.

A lot has happened since returning from ARGFest. Mainly, on arriving home, I found a package in the mail from a "Felicity Velius". Someone I'd connected with on Twitter briefly thinking they were doing something with Steve Peters' whimsical startup World Without Helium. She had a blog that looked like someone who just started playing ARGs. And a link to Wikibruce.com with the label "A Sexy Man" (why, thank you Embarassed )
Not much more came of that.

So this package in the mail was one of those things that made me go "hmmm"...

I reported the content and instructions over on Wikibruce:
http://wikibruce.com/2012/07/the-barons-archive-begs-attention/
It seemed I had been given a key to retrieve lockbox in Texas by July 20th. It was now July 31st. And the mail was sent July 13th. Yay US->Canada postage!

Anyway, @FelicityVelius assured me that the package could still be retrieved and the 'deadline' was extended. Essentially, ASAP, as she was in personal danger and may not be able to communicate any more.

Well the rest is history.

I mailed the key to Toenolla who graciously drove down to Waco Texas to retrieve the lockbox and report back the findings, which she did:
http://blog.toenolla.com/?p=412

Can of worms! This rabbithole goes much deeper...

I've since created a wiki to track all of this and what we know so far. For the "story" version, please visit
http://felicity.wikibruce.com/Story_so_far
Lots still has to be documented and archived publicly, but the meat of everything should be available there, and via the two articles linked above.

Something's telling me there's some good production value behind this. I've done some snooping and found some meta info, but it's not all that important at this point as there's no real concrete leads that I know of yet, just some interesting themes.

So, please follow! Spread the word! There are some unsolved puzzles that could be analyzed too, which I've briefly mentioned here:
http://felicity.wikibruce.com/Puzzles

Thoughts?

Ummm...I live 10 minutes from Waco. Is there anything to suggest more things might be taking place in this area?

(is it bad that the first thing that popped into my head was the Branch Davidians and the Waco Siege? ugh, I need to stop researching cults so much...)

Hmmmm.... might not be able to make it out to Waco, but another Texan here! Prob gonna lurk, have other things to devote time to, but if there's anything near Garland/Addison, I can get out there really easily.

Here's the result of overlaying the frames in the nyan cat video:

The QR code was literally just a forward to wikibruce.com.
Best latin translation I could find is "whatever will be, every (mis-)fortune can be overcome through endurance"

Numbers! What do they meeeeeean?!

ETA: GenCubed on twitter had the idea that they might be literature related, as one of the links on felicityvelius.com points to an online literature network. The only search option there however is a phrase search filtered by author. ideas?

Catching up, trying to see if there is anything to make of the Peter Rabbit picture and MP3 on the site. Nothing so far, but ouch?

My first thought was an index. Maybe to The Tale of Peter Rabbit?

The 2nd number is very large though...

The Beatrix page however lists a number of stories
http://www.online-literature.com/beatrix-potter/great-big-treasury-of-beatrix-/

perhaps the 1st number is the story (1-10), the 2nd is the word, and the 3rd is the letter #?

...endurance indeed, if so! Shocked

That was my first thought too. The latin phrase is part of a larger quote from Virgil's Aeneid. It has twelve books and each book had hundreds of lines. I thought maybe the numbers referred to book.line.letter but some of the second numbers are still too large for that to work. Maybe someone else can make it work...or maybe Aeneid is the wrong tree all together.

Yeah, I found a copy of the Aenid on Google Books with the latin and line numbers - checking in on that now!

http://books.google.ca/books?id=eespAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA106&lpg=PA106&dq=%22QUIDQUID+ERIT,+SUPERANDA+OMNIS%22+Virgil+Aeneid&source=bl&ots=cDXwYHMK6T&sig=dNyCg9wmj9qrgtXq1ZfyWCXDtDM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=yGUlULmaO7GgyAGxqICIBw&ved=0CEgQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=%22QUIDQUID%20ERIT%2C%20SUPERANDA%20OMNIS%22%20Virgil%20Aeneid&f=false

eta: yep, not enough line numbers in checking Lib II (the 2.*.* nums)

I am likewise not having much luck with the Beatrix Potter Treasury. I started with the second book, and there are certainly enough words if it's book.word.letter, but I haven't found a good word-counting scheme that gives me a seven-letter word at 422 (for the top of the second column of the numbers, 2.422.7). On the Literature Network website, the second story starts with a note from Beatrix, and I've tried counting that, excluding that, and counting everything after the salutation. There are a LOT of hyphenated words, though, and I'm afraid that some may be counted as one word and some as 2. In which case...someone with more endurance will have to figure it out! Smile

FWIW, there are not enough lines in the BP stories for book.line.word.

WIN!

Thanks to y'all, it is indeed.......
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
book and line numbers, to the english version of Virgil's Aeneid
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/228/228-h/228-h.htm

Book 4 for some reason was all one line out sometime after line 68, so after adjusting, the following message results (which, now, is clearly a late discovery Razz )

must be careful beginning to draw attention keep digging and fighting friends I will continue as long as I can soon I will send orders for the most important task yet the rest is up to you

Props to everyone for the steps to this solve...!

Puzzles... next? Laughing

Well done!

I'm combing through the other documents, looking for puzzles and/or an idea of what we're dealing with.

For those who haven't seen it, here is the text of the note, apparently sent in 1912, that accompanied the original letter from Felicity to Wikibruce:
Quote:
My Dear Colleague,

How blessed we are to reside in a land with a reliably prompt and private post. You will be pleased to hear that our commodity reallocation plan is proceeding according to schedule. Heavy investment in Steel, Rubber, Copper and Crude Oil should serve us well through the close of this Decade. If you have not already done so, our dear friend, Baron R. who I have been told is quite well though advanced in years, suggests a gradual sale of any European consumer based assets before the close of 1913.
To Our Continued Success, E. Harrison

Handling notes:
To be destroyed by or collected upon the death of recipient

A147-1B-1912

My read on this is that the writer of the note is aware of the impending beginning of World War I. He suggests investing in steel, rubber, copper, and oil-- all major war supplies-- and removing assets from Europe before 1914, the start of the War.

The "A147-1B-1912" at the end could be a code?
"Baron R." may be a recognizable historical figure? (Baron von Richthofen aka the Red Baron?? Incredibly unlikely, but I figured it couldn't hurt to mention!)

A quick search turned up nothing on Eugene McKinstry or Steven W. Howell (well, there's a guy in prison in Texas named Steven W. Howell. But I'm guessing he's not our guy).

And now I have to do some actual work. Rolling Eyes
