This is for the second part of the Nebo gate:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The painting is "Battle of Camperdown" by Thomas Whitcombe.
Admiral Adam Duncan defeated a large Dutch fleet in this battle.

I think the solution to this riddle would be to send mail to an address, which has something to do with this battle and ends gmail.com. The password would then be sent in return mail.

I've tried sending mail to camperdownSPLATgmail.com, but no answer has come, at least not yet.

EDIT: At least the mail did not bounce directly, so there at least could be such an address. I also tried other addresses, venerableSPLATgmail.com did not bounce either, but no answer.

There has also been a bomb attack to a pub called "Admiral Duncan", maybe something along those lines?

Remember it's five letters. I don't know about you but know how many letters the password is helps me weed out things a bit easier.

I think we're all working off the assumption that we need to send an email to the correct address to get the password.

In an attempt to get the right email, I went to the gmail "create account" page and typed in usernames that I thought might be correct to see which ones were already taken.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
camperdown was taken, so I sent an email there. Looks like battleofcamperdown was still available, though.

EDIT:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
On further searching, it seems as though camperdown is for some Australian news agency or something. Confused So, I suppose that's not it.

Mercury Fulminate?

Mercury fulminate is Hg(CNO)2. There are only 5 letters (or numbers) on the password, so it doesn't fit. Tried HgCNO, didn't work.

Meant having to do with the email.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
<Duncan's attack> could be just about anything. I've tried many things directly relating to the battle, but so far nothing has come out of it. It could even be an adjective, describing the nature of the attack, such as "hasty", "rash" or even "lucky_clusterfuck".

I've also tried thinking of things relating to the pub bombing in 1999.

I've tried taking wild guesses at the password. (it was something like this with the first clue, since we got the answer from the background image on the gate page rather than the hint... I still haven't figured out the connection to Mr. Green)

I'm way too tired for this now. I'll do other stuff now, and get some sleep, too. I'll let someone else sort this one out Smile

Eh.... I hear you aseameba. I'm out of good ideas and have been trying random searches. I tried duncan's attack Hg(CNO)2 gmail.com and got this page.

http://km.aifb.kit.edu/sites/corpex/data/en/bigrams_1460.txt

It's a bigram and it does list duncan and attack but I don't think it's related. I might just need to look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The closest I've gotten to a connection is that Admiral Adam Duncan and company captured a Dutch ship called the Mercury (Mercurius) and renamed it HMS Hermes in 1796.

I've also been trying random 5-letter words, to no avail. I tried to find what the actual name of Duncan's maneuver during the Battle of Camperdown was called, since it's apparently a deviation from the normal way they used to attack, but "leeward" is all that really came up.

I've also come up with tons of random 5-letter words, but most of them expletives, having nothing to do with the task at hand...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Duncan's attack was a deviation from the "normal" way because he did not have time to prepare his formation properly and had to attack quickly. The signals he sent were partly contradictory and misunderstood, (partly because poor visibility and also because some ships had outdated signal books) which resulted in confusion and disarray, but somehow they were still able to pull the stunt off without severe casualties. Thus, "a lucky clusterfuck"

I hate loose ends, so if anyone can come up with the connection between Mr. Green and the first answer, I would really appreciate it. I even watched the movie to see if there was any connection to be seen, but other than being entertaining, it was no use.

and, concerning the second part:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Has anyone tried alternative spellings of Camperdown, i.e. Camperduin and Kamperduin? Or alternative spellings for other related names? Dates and numbers?

I'm at work now, so I can't spend too much time for this and I think I'm falling ill with the flu again... Sad

The only connection I can find between Mr Green and Duncan is admiral Duncan's pub.

What I meant was the connection between Mr Green and the answer to the same puzzle,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
dimethylmercury
I don't understand how they relate. Mr Green is supposed to be the hint to the first part, but I can't see how the hint points to the answer. The answer came from the gate page background picture (at least for me).

I don't think there has to be any connection between things from different parts of the puzzle. Mr Green is in the first part, Duncan is in the second part. There might be some connection, but it probably isn't important.

Duncan's attack:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There is a tactic called "Crossing the T" http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread341397/pg1, which is what I believe admiral Duncan tried to do in the battle of Camperdown. It was executed poorly due lack of time and confusion about the signals, but it seems to have worked.

Seems nobody is making any progress on this one. Any word from the other group or groups working on this? We're running out of time here... the next gate opens in 30 hours!

EDIT:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I tried e-mailing crossing.the.tSPLATgmail.com and also without the periods and with and without capital letters. All versions of "Capping the T" bounced right back with error message, but all versions of "Crossing the T" did not. Maybe something here? Maybe they bounce a bit later.
