How NOT to launch

I'm curious about how you think one not should go about to launch an ARG.

Launching is the best part. Be careful

It's better than Christmas. It's more fun than a day at the beach. You finally get to see people go, "whoa" and then you realize you've got 6 months worth of work to do before next week.

Don't launch till your done with the hard stuff. I'm thinking 85% done with everything 15% left for flexibility. Get it all proof read, check to make sure it works in all the main browsers. Make sure all the puzzle solves point to what they're supposed to point to. Make sure you can desteg the pictures with the password you stegged them with.

Be a boyscout and have it all prepared or suffer the little people.

Don't launch without adequate server security. Plug all known holes.

All of them.

Then check again.

Then think like a script kiddie.

Then check again.

Then think like an evil hacker.

Then check again.

Cool

I've been idly curious lately (for no good reason I promise!) about how an in-person ARG launch would be reacted to.

e.g. The PM through association with people in this community has come to know where some of them work or play. An actor is chosen to initiate the ARG by contacting known ARGers in the flesh (in an unthreatening way). The hope is that that person will either take the bait and get involve in the game or at least pass on the inof to other people who might.

Imagine too that the 'TINAG' principle has been dealt with in some way such as the fictional character having both a reason and the means to find and contact this person(s).

My question is ... would this be too intense given it hasn't been directly invited?

Acheron pre-game seemed to happen along these lines, but then, that was at an ARG-o-con thingy which kind of implies a degree of consent, or at least interest in these things happening.

What if there was the same 'targeted' launch, but not in person. What if (again, honouring TINAG) the PM knew a newsgroup or another forum where someone hung out, that was relevant and started posting the breadcrumbs there? Would that be too intense? Intrusive?

Like I said, just idle curiousity ... don't read anything into it ... yet Very Happy

This has been done. Say no more.

Personally, I would love it. Others might feel differently.

A lot of ARGs seem to launch with the rabbit hole posted somewhere a la "Hey, I found this interesting thing.." It's kind of cheesy, but it is safe and at least gets the ball rolling. It doesn't seem to attract the veteran players much though.

How to launch is a hotly debated topic because of the TINAG element and because you want people to be sure to recognize your effort as a game and not just an advertisement or a minor diversion.

One thing I would recommend is building some redundancy into your launch vehicle. If you do something with too few people, it won't get around or might be dismissed without being recognized.

how not to launch

I've been thinking about trying to start an ARG i am working on by putting an arnold cipher ( where you have a book with page, paragraph, line and word numbers) and have people find an initial URL through that or use microfilm and have a friend at a local library put it in the stash or would that be a better 2nd or third step?
so what do yawll think?
but on what not to do? dont start until your almost done ( think its been said) and dont be super obvious like a billboard (all though that could be neat Very Happy ) well thats my $.02

Dear Guest Larred - Hello and welcome to the forums. If you intend to stay, please register Smile (ETA - ACTUALLY I see you HAVE a registered account with us, Please use THAT account to post in the future. End Edit) We are generally a friendly bunch, although what I am about to say may not come off sounding as so....

You posted in the forums about needing help for your game already, you don't need to repeat your game idea in multiple threads. Also, and this is important: Please don't Necro threads that are 9 years old.
