Mars code Kind of a cool thing... The planetary society sent up a DVD on the Spirit Mars lander with 4 million names on it. Around the edge is, apparently a "code"
https://planetary.org/redrover-dvd/good1.jpg
Anyone else seen this or taken a crack at it? The sequence seems to be
Code:
|-|--|||---||||||--||---|
-||---||||-|||---|-|--|--
||----|---||--||--||----|
Repeated thrice
Doesn't appear to be binary, unless I entered it wrong. The site claims the code is "very sophisticated and difficult to crack." Of course, they may be targeting 8-year olds

Hey Danman, those links are dead parrots.
Anymore info?
Edit: hmm. I wonder if it's the https that blocks it through my firewall?
Thanks, Magesteff for the pic.
Lego, hmm...
Here's a link to another article about the same thing, but not https
And here's the pic of the wheel without its code. Excellent, clear image - taken on Earth. How often do you have to append that to a statement?

The link seems to work for me too. In addition, they've added the first clue:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Clue No. 1, January 10, 2004:
A longer text using the same code would read:
-llll-llll-----l-ll-lll-l-l-l-ll--l---lll-------ll---llll----l----ll-l-l-llll--l---lll-l-ll-ll-----llll-ll-l--lll-ll-l-llll--l---ll---lll--l----ll----ll--ll--l---l-l-lll----l-l-ll---------lll--l-l-llll-----lll-l-l-lll-ll-lll---lll--l-l-l-ll---ll-ll--llllll-l---ll---lll-ll----ll-l---l-l--l-llll--l.---ll---lll--l-----llll-llll------lll-lll-lllll-ll-ll-llll--ll---lll----l-ll--,---ll---lll--l-----l-ll-l-lll-l-l---ll----ll--llll---llll---l-llll----l-lllll----ll--l---lllllll,---ll----ll--ll--ll----l---ll---llll---ll--l--ll---ll--llll---lll--l-ll-------ll----ll--ll-l-ll-------ll--ll--lll-l-ll-ll-l---l-l--lll---lll-l-lll-l-l---ll-ll--lll-l-----l---l-l-l-l---lll-l--------lll-l-llll--ll-l--lll--ll--ll----l---ll-----ll---lll-l-l-llll-----l---ll-llllll---l-l-l-l---lll-l-------llll-llll--lll--lll-l-ll-llll-----llll.
Any ideas what that cleartext might be, we could always reverse engineer?

[HUMOR] I think I've got it:

It decodes to:

Hey Dan, try this...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves."
The code I have so far....
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A= -1- E=--1 H= 11--11 I=11---1 L=11-1-1 N=11--1- O=-11
P=1-11-1 S=111 T=11---- V=1-1111--- Y=1-11--
and the space between words=---
I hope that helps.
And, dmax, those links are resting.

Completed code book is as follows:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

-l- A
l-lll- B
ll-ll- C
ll-l-- D
--l E
l-l-l- F
l-l-ll G
ll--ll H
ll---l I
? J
l-llll--l K
ll-l-l L
l-l--- M
ll--l- N
-ll O
l-ll-l P
? Q
1-- R
lll S
ll---- T
ll-lll U
l-llll--- V
l-l--l W
? X
l-ll-- Y
? Z
Man, that one was a PITA. I knew that was the quote from before, but I kept getting hung up on the spaces between punctuation. I'm not going to post the solve here because, well, you should do it yourself.

Anthrax, xnbomb once told me that you are "faster than lightning". Omg, I was so excited when I finished, only to see you that you already got it - and, like, an hour ago Congrats!
Driz, you're a genius. I stared at all the "our"s and "in"s for a while, but couldn't figure out how to break them into letters. You're my hero.
Uhh - the attachemnt is a SPOILER: If anyone cares, here is what this looks like (sorry it's kinda ugly)

Ok, since I had the program mostly written and I need to learn Perl anyway, here is an online translator:
http://s88749232.onlinehome.us/encode.html
It only does encoding, as there is no reliable way to decode this automaticly.

It's a Huffman Code. To see this, create a binary tree (all you CS majors pull out that old Algorithms textbook) and mark the left branches as '-' and the right as '|'. Keep creating branches in this manner and mark off the letters as you get to them, for example, "left, left, right" would be "--|", which is E. Since none of the nodes that correspond to letters have children, it is a Huffman code. By extension you could create codes for J, Q, X and Z by extending the only 'available' node, which is "|-||||", so you could have:
J = |-||||-|
Q = |-|||||-
X = |-||||||-
Z = |-|||||||
You can create a decoding algorithm for a Huffman code, as long as you don't "lose your place" as you decode each letter. I leave this as an exercise for the reader
Question is, could this code have been broken without the clues (either by hand or computer)?
