Still don't understand why you wouldn't just jump the dude and get to the bottom of it all.

Other than so you could keep the plot going, that is.

Well, they don't really know who it is, it could be one of their friends who isn't in their right mind, or even someone new (not saying this is likely, just looking at it from a realistic POV). They aren't like Alex, and I would imagine they don't want to hurt anyone if they can avoid it.
