Abednego's Journal

10th January, 2001. 5:46 pm. What a wonderful beginning!

Greetings to all of my friends in Minnesota!

Well, just over a week now and I have to say it's been such a wonderful start to my new ministry. The congregation here is comprised of nearly every race under the sun, just as His Lord intended in His Majesty, and they have done everything in their power to make me feel at home.

Why the first night I arrived, they held a full congregation pot-luck dinner with me as the guest of honor. I had the chance to meet nearly everyone who belonged to the church (except for Greg Moore, who was in the hospital fighting leukemia--I've been over to pray with him every night since that first one. The power of prayer can move mountains!)

As soon as possible, I'm going to see how I can get some pictures of the church here sent along to you all. You'd be amazed at how beautiful it looks when the sun is setting through the stained glass. The Lord truly knew what He was doing when He allowed this church to be founded. Maybe I can find a way to get the pictures put onto a computer--Gladys, do you know how to do that?

Speaking of my new home church, the story of how it came to be is astonishing. It was founded nearly 150 years ago by a small group of Baptists who felt that the Lord has spoken to them directly through a vision. It was a joint vision, apparently, and they each woke with an image of the finished church in their minds. It took nearly 5 years to create, but in the end they did exactly what they saw in their minds' eyes. To this day, the church has been restored 10 times--but always back to the way it was originally. And I have to say I agree with them entirely. Rarely have I seen such an elegantly designed house of worship, with 14 different stained glass windows and a pulpit that is so perfectly designed in acoustics it almost makes me feel like I am committing the sin of pride to speak there.

Of course, if there were any chance of that, the congregation itself is more than enough for me to work off that sin. These are indeed troubled times, and while the congregation itself is fantastic, the troubles they have had are certainly real--and very sad. More on that another time, however, for right now I must run (well, hobble--these legs are giving out fast, folks) to the Bingo tournament. I've promised to counsel Mrs. Jones on the loss of her child.

Such a poor loss--the girl was only 4 weeks old and out like a candle. SIDS, the doctors said. Mrs. Jones, of course, is having a hard time understanding why the Lord would take away her child. These are the times where my calling is most important.

I've heard that the address to reach me by normal mail (they call it snail mail for some reason) has been posted on the news bulletin board back in Buffalo. Feel free to write me with any stories you'd like to share--but remember, I am no longer your minister and if you need solace or counseling, you should speak to Reverend Sloane. Yes, Bill, I mean you.

Praise be to God!

Reverend *Sloane*?! Can you imagine Arvin Sloane as a preacher man? Has anyone found this news bulletin board in Buffalo yet?
