Re: So I just saw the "Slenderman" movie
The Operator - aka the Marble Hornets movie

Some of you may have heard a while back that they were going to do a movie based off of the Slenderman mythos, and more specifically MH. Well, they just did a screening here in LA, and naturally I jumped at the chance to go. Marble Hornets is what got me into the slenderverse way back when, though I haven't kept up with it since I got into EMH and TT (better scares and way better acting imho).

The basic premise follows a news team (cameraman, reporter and producer) who are working on a segment about house foreclosures. In one of the houses they come across a box of DV tapes (of course!), and inexplicably decide to take them. At first, it just looks like a bunch of innocuous home videos of a happy family, but guess who keeps popping up in the background? Cut to hours of obsessive slenderstalking footage, and mad scribbles of the operator symbol. This sets off our main trio on trying to figure out what happened to the family, and in the process, they become marked themselves.

The plot's not much to get excited over. It lacks the creepy, disjointed and atmospheric feeling of the Youtube series because it lacks the benefit of time, and short bursts of information that the youtube format lends itself to. There's also no text or major timejumps, so it doesn't necessarily 'feel' like a MH movie ( no Masky either Sad ). I caught a few shoutouts to the series, though (a missing persons poster for Alex!) Also, no one ever actually refers to a "Slenderman", or an "operator" for that matter. A bit disappointing, but I wonder if there were some legal issues with using that name?

For the good -- the acting is almost uniformly excellent (the main trio is very, very good). They really sold the fear, but also the banter and goofing around. I don't think any of the youtube series out there come close to this, and it's easily the most professional thing about the film. I was waiting with bated breath to see how awful the actors would be, so I was very pleasantly surprised.

There are also two very strong "money" sequences (you know, like how every 5 months an amazing, shocking entry comes out that leaves everyone floored, before we get another 5 months of bland, wheel spinning entries?). I'm not going to give anything away, but the ending for the three main characters is as thrilling and intense as any of the youtube series', if not exactly creepy.

And I guess that's my main complaint with the film. It's just not that creepy. Slenderman never moves (he's always facing straight towards the camera, and only travels via jumpcuts), or appears all that menacing. He wasn't especially tall, or slender, and his head had a very goofy roundness to it. I think back to that MH entry where Alex filmed Slendy creeping around on the front porch -- for me, that is slenderman, and there's nothing close to that here. Also, don't expect to see any razzle-dazzle effects like you'd see in TT. I almost wish they had've brought him on board for VFX, because he could've put some life into this thing.

I don't think the movie does much to expand the Slender mythos or bring anything new for fans of the series. We still don't know what the operator symbol represents, or why people keep drawing it everywhere. We also don't know why/what/how Slenderman does what he does, or what he really wants. And yet, for people not familiar with Slenderman, I don't think the movie really sells him as a character.

The audience I saw this with were laughing through a lot of the scares. I couldn't tell if this was "haha that made me jump" or "haha this is really stupid", but it didn't feel like the reaction the filmmakers were going for.

So then the movie you saw was this one then?

Regarding what you said about Slendy, that's likely why they had Doug Jones come back and reshoot some scenes. Hopefully he looks more convincing in the final cut.

Yeah, I hope so. Anything would help in that department. The part in the trailer where the girl is getting pulled through the doorway by an unseen force is from the climax, and that's the one really exceptional scene but it's super short.

And the operator's MO is so inconsistent. With the family the characters are investigating, he just possesses them and makes them kill each other, but then with the main trio I guess he gets bored and decides to just throw them against walls until they're dead? Like I said, it's a cool scene compared to the rest of the movie, but it doesn't really fit the style of the rest of it.

Gonna purchase it anyway. Kinda wondering WHAT platforms it will be available for. Want it for my PS4 or even Amazon so I can buy it and watch it on my PS4 or Wii U.

Seeing that poster reminded me of a short made back in 2012 called Proxy: A Slenderman Story.

Maybe Moran saw this and decided to give his film a similar title.

I'm really hoping it does. Though I have a feeling the film is just going to continue disappointed me. I'll still watch it, since it's based on MH and THAC is pretty awesome otherwise.

I feel like there was way too much hype about this. Maybe we pushed our expectations a little too far.

I just finished watching the movie. I liked it, but it wasn't Marble Hornets. They needed to spend a little more time on character development. I did like the style of shooting the used. It stayed true to MH but also did so in a way that made sense. I also loved the MH Easter eggs scattered throughout the movie--from phrases to pictures to scenes.

Again, I liked it, but it wasn't as good as MH.

Commentary in the film with some spoilers listed in spoilers below.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
They made it where you can only see TO through the camera instead of the camera being the means through which the audience could see what the characters see or to simply record the events happening.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I loved the Alex Kralie poster!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The final scene's reference to MH was also a very nice touch

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It didn't feel like paranormal activity until the final sequence in the cabin

So I just watched the Marble Hornets movie, and I'm sorry, but it just was awful. Like, really, really bad. I think the thing that did it for me was the characters. Now, I get that any good character shouldn't be absolutely perfect in their actions and stuff, but these characters had absolutely NO element of likeability. I hated absolutely every single one of them, and was not concerned at all for what happened to them. Also, it just wasn't that scary. At all. This part really bothers me especially, because there were so many awesome things they could have done in so many scenes, that they just… didn't. And on top of all of that, it was sooooo slow in it's pacing. This didn't feel like Marble Hornets at all, it felt like a bad Paranormal Activity spin-off with a slenderman that appears every 20 minutes in the same exact way. They did nothing to follow the rules of the series, and took out the pills, the masky/hoody type characters, and instead made the Operator only viewable through a camera, and gave it a bunch of crappy rules that made absolutely no sense. Now, I won't give away the ending, but let's just say that it made ABSOLUTELY no sense. Like, none. At all. In fact, I think the ending by itself deserves a rant of it's own it was so bad. I'm sorry, guys. I really wanted to like this one, I just couldn't.
