BrainStorm - The First Knowledge-Powered MMO Game
Sponsored Post

This sponsored post is a first for Unfiction and an experiment of sorts. As you may know, we have struggled over the years to find ways to pay for the significant hosting and incidental costs of maintaining this forum. For the last several years, the majority of the expenses have been paid by me personally, and supplemented by donations from generous users as well as "weekly sponsorships" from a few independent or professional ARG developers.

In particular, we have tried to avoid "pure" advertising including text and banner ads, which we feel do a disservice to our users and would likely be financially ineffective with our tech-oriented audience due to widely available ad-blocking options. We feel this particular sponsorship is a worthwhile endeavor for several reasons.

BrainStorm is a "knowledge-powered" massively multiplayer online game produced by Genia, which is a small independent game studio staffed by about 20 employees. It is a strategy game in which real life knowledge may translate into actual power in the game. It's a free to play game with no pay-to-win mechanics, with a unique mechanic that may appeal to alternate reality gamers and puzzle solvers.

The game is currently in a closed beta and Genia has graciously extended an invitation to Unfiction users in the hope of finding some beta testers who will play the game and help improve it prior to a public launch. Simply click the BrainStorm image at the top of the page to sign up!

A short excerpt from the official Game Guide follows:

Genia wrote:
Brain Storm is a massively multiplayer strategy game where knowledge is the key to victory.

You are a leader in a new world where knowledge is synonymous with power. Build your city by deepening your knowledge of the subjects that interest you. Send your experts to the ends of the Earth to discover its secrets. Defend yourself with your cunning and genius and steal the knowledge that others have accumulated. Form alliances and compete against thousands of individuals to build an Oracle: the source of Absolute Power.

Thank you SpaceBass for letting us reach out to unfiction's community!

It's been 6 years now since I started lurking on unfiction, and it's because of this great community that I am now a puppet master.

When Genia Games (the developer behind Brain Storm) asked me where they should advertise, I advised them to try here first. Unfiction is by far one of the best communities I've come across in a long time, and this is one way I would like to give back.

So if you need a break between ARGs but want to keep your brain active, come play with us. =)

All the best,

I was intrigued when I first saw the banner, sounds like a great concept. And, now that I know it has Anashel's seal of approval I have to give it a try Very Happy . I hope the new sponsorship model works out, and takes some of the weight off your back SpaceBass. Seriously, we all appreciate everything you've done over the years to keep this wonderful community alive.

Yes, I sort of got a little addicted to playing last night and I am unoriginal in my naming. I am using the same nick as here and if you want into the uF alliance, post here or PM me!

ETA: Also if anyone with actual artistic skill wants to come up with a better emblem, feel free!

Accepted! It looks like alliances are limited to 10 members so we only have a couple of spots left. Then someone will have to start another uF alliance.

registered, stuck my city on an island off the Alaska coast. I didn't even finish the tutorial. I'm not sure this is something that I would go out of my way to play, and I wouldn't normally spend any further time there myself, but I feel like I should put in a bit more effort. If the alliances are limited membership, I won't take a slot away from someone who will put it to better use. (What becomes of my city if I walk away? Can I have someone else move in and take it over?)

Yea, I feel kind of similar to catherwood. I went through the tutorial and then spent about an hour trying to build/mine/whatever. For me, the most interesting part was the random trivia questions. Other than that, it just didn't seem like something that would be all that engaging, although I realize that an hour of playtime is not that long. I know that many Internet games use the 'forced-time-sink-to-complete-actions' mechanic, but it just rubs me the wrong way.

The graphics/interface is slick, though!

Thanks!

Hey, thank you all for the feedback! If you have any idea that would make the game more fun for you, please share! Along with what you currently like also Smile

If you walk away from the tutorial in less the 24h, your slot will be open for someone else to take it. Starting on an island may not be the best idea indeed. =)

The game itself is quite interesting, aside from the trivia there is a lot of strategic approach. Knowledge fragment are distributed logically, for instance if you try to complete the Knowledge Unit Gold Rush, you actually have to track down country and city that had major gold vein or had boomtown and such. So there's an investigation part in the game also.

Bests,

Although I usually don't play these types of games, I felt compelled to playing this after seeing you sponsored Unfiction, and after playing it for a few minutes (I'll play more tomorrow), I must say that it is rather good, especially for an independent game in beta. The soundtrack is rather good, and the graphics are slightly above par. The gameplay is mostly easy to figure out, and I could see more difficulty being added in later. Also, I feel like the trivia can be made to feel a little less... forced, but that will be improved in further updates. Over all, a very good game, I look forward to exploring more tomorrow.
