Ha, I spent all of that time rambling and everything! Well, at least we have the answers now! Wink

So, um, now what? Do we wait for his next correspondence? Confused

Do you think that RU would use a portrait containing a contemporary of Poe's and not mean for us to do something with it? Perhaps it's just a nod, but we shall see.

Honestly, though, drizjr, it is simply amazing that you uncovered the source! And is it funny that I pronounce your username "driz-zing-ger"? He he he.

I wonder if the artist, Mathew Brady, has some importance here (apparently a very important man). Hmm.

EDIT:

Well, isn't THIS a curious myth!

That's an interesting and weird story, S.P.I, and rambling is good; it sometimes sparks ideas in other people or clears up confusion or, my favorite, says out loud what others are thinking.
In fact, I wish someone would ramble on about Virginia and Annabel Lee. Who is RU's love?
Poe's wife was Virginia.... she inspired many of his works, including Annabel Lee. Is RU just comparing his love, Virginia, to Annabel Lee as tribute to Poe? Will 2.0's post has me thinking that we are talking to Poe (with suspension of disbelief), but Poe was a writer, not an artist...(it seems to me that LARPers and ARGers are breeds apart) oh, maybe we're talking to a Poe LARPer who has gone off the deep end....btw, is anyone here going to Costa Mesa, California in mid-September?... I sure would hate to miss the final climax.

Well, on to other things.
Another connection that Henry Clay and Edgar Allan Poe share is a very important date for them each; January 29 th

1845 – "The Raven" is published in the New York Evening Mirror, the first publication with the name of the author, Edgar Allan Poe
1850 – Henry Clay introduces the Compromise of 1850 to the U.S. Congress.

Looks like we have a question to respond to on the tumblr page.
How should I win over my love?

I suspect R.U. is looking for:
Quote:
AS YOU SURELY KNOW I FIND INSPIRATION IN THE WORDS DEPICTIONS OF PERIL FEAR AND UNREST FEED MY IMAGINATION AND IGNITE MY SOULS DESIRE FOR CREATION

hmmm... love-winning-over depictions of peril fear and unrest?

Just for my own benefit, I am trying to add punctuation here to see if by separating the words into sentences we can obtain new meaning:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
As you surely know, I find inspiration in the words. Depictions of peril, fear, and unrest feed my imagination and ignite my soul's desire for creation.

Also, Is he asking us to give him a phrase which conveys to him, IG, that "we" deciphered his most recent message? I'll try to make sentences for the entire solve to see if there is some meaning not yet plain:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I am an artist. I lose myself in my art. An exhibition, such as I now toil upon, consumes my being. A set will soon astound you all, a masterwork of such beauty, I plan. After searching many months in vain, I did find her, in this most pertinent yet unexpected morbid place. She does not suspect, my love. My Annabel Lee, who lives in this city by the sea. I haunt every waking moment. You may feel privileged to bear witness in the coming month, as she again delights in my attention. I confess myself with some sorrow, that she cannot yet know my visage, but with your kind aid, I dare, we shall soon -- both -- make a fine impression. As you surely know, I find inspiration in the words. Depictions of peril, fear, and unrest feed my imagination and ignite my soul's desire for creation. I do my best to give my audience the worth of their trouble; my life has little meaning beyond this. Never forget, as the poet writes, death is a good fellow and keeps open house. We shall all meet him, some sooner than others. Preparations are in order.

Soon, my Virginia

Now reading the message, Drizjr, it sounds like Virginia is RU's love, presuming that RU is Poe. He is writing to Virginia about their (that is, his and Virginia's) plans for Annabel Lee. This is, presuming, that the way I sorted the message was accurate. What are your thoughts?

Very thoughtful work S.P.I

With a minor revision,

Quote:
She does not suspect, my love, my Annabel Lee, who lives in this city by the sea.

I don't believe we can rule out (not yet anyway) that Virginia, Annabel Lee, The Lost Lenore, etc. are interchangeable in RU's mind, and the You he addresses is us the readers.

I think that is a pretty significant revision. Laughing And thank you, booba, although I did not do much. What is this Lost Lenore?

It makes sense to read it as a letter addressed to us, but then why end it with, "Soon, my Virginia"? Wait...

^--- maybe the last line should be punctuated that way? That falls closer in line with your theory, booba. I also revised the "my love" sentence to match your punctuation suggestion. Hmm...

Okay...right...so...I have no idea where to go from here! Laughing

Just received a text from R.U. Anyone else get one?

I told him(?) to look up victorian flower symbolism, etc and they sent back they were going to try roses since they were 'the most logical choice'.

Honestly I have a new phone and I thought it was a friend of mine who's initials are also RU and I started chittering away like it was him asking for advice... ah well. Figured out it was the ARG's RU after a few minutes of wondering who the hell Virgina was.

Yep, asked me if he should do the single red rose. I suggested that was the common symbol of love but that he was not a common individual.

So if this dude is trying to woo Virginia with flowers, perhaps the "love" in the message is indeed Virginia.

If so, then perhaps the reference to "Annabel Lee" is simply a metaphor or a term of (creepy) endearment.

Maybe three red roses and a half bottle of cognac? Again kind of creepy.

Sorry this took so long. Attached is the Bird of Prey image with dante's decode. dante, I only found one other error. Besides that missing E in CONFSS, and the off color U; there is also an off color F (could it be a nod to unFiction?). Oh, and one word dropped, dante....bless your eyes.

The punctuations help in understanding.
I agree, all creepy, and stalker-ish.

Well annabelle lee was written in memory of poe's dead wife virginia - so it would be a a creepy metaphor

maybe he wants to kill her...

Didn't see the response on tumblr until now.
