Looks like that was the right phrase, now to work out the method.

Good job!

I put the puzzle on a Google spread sheet with what these old eyes see as the colors.
It should be accessible for anyone to look at and edit. Let me know if it's not.
Feel free to correct, suggest or contribute to the spreadsheet.

The string I got is:

Puzzle: What is the method of the substitution cipher?
Is this anything?

Sorry for the double post.

So we need to figure out HOW the message was encrypted... and looking at those niggling hex color codes that RU keeps posting, I noticed that among the eight (or possibly nine) of them, are all the letters of the alphabet except for JQX.

The list, with duplicate letters removed:
Cerulean CERULAN
Timberwolf TIMBWOF
Black K
Red D
Navy Blue VY
Laser Lemon S (we have all the letters in Unmellow Yellow up to now, so we don't need it)
Outer Space P
Now, here's where the idea breaks down. Would we use both or just one of the pinks?
Hot Magenta HG
and/or
Purple Pizzazz Z

CERULANTIMBWOFKDVYSP HG Z JQX

Just some food for thought. Smile

I notice that Mr Toasty has an avatar with rather peculiar eyes. Was R. U. being literal in this instance? If so, then the image right below Mr Toasty's avatar is R.U.'s avatar. Is there a type of cipher that is constructed via images?

Or if not that, I also noticed the emphasis "in YOUR case", not only personalizing it to Mr Toasty himself, but maybe also suggesting something altogether different but literal as well...that being...CAPS LOCK...as in, lower case or upper case...so maybe there is a cipher that deals in only caps or deals in only lower case or something...

*scratches head* Am I making any sense? It is 2:03 AM right now. I shouldn't even be writing this. Laughing

I was getting mostly the same colors as danteIL so now I'm just looking at possible colors just by eyeball. I'm finding a number that are just a wee bit off. This may help us build an alphabet.

FCB4D5 - Lavender
008078 --> 158078 --> Pine Green
414A4C - Outer Space
5A75CE - Iris
86A968 --> 87A96B --> Asparagus
FF6B84 --> FC6C85 --> Wild Watermelon
FF6B84 --> FC6C85 --> Wild Watermelon
6E5060 - Eggplant
6BAE80 --> 6DAE81 --> Forest Green
6BAE80 --> 6DAE81 --> Forest Green
FF5E4E --> FF6E4A --> Outrageous Orange
FFA086 --> FFA089 --> Vivid Tangerine
6BAE80 --> 6DAE81 --> Forest Green
00ACD8
DBD7D1 - Timberwolf
FCB4D5 - Lavender
FF5E4E --> FF6E4A --> Outrageous Orange
6BAE80 --> 6DAE81 --> Forest Green
FFBCB3 -->FDBCB4 --> Melon
6BAE80 --> 6DAE81 --> Forest Green
F21F4A

Are we getting any closer?

The last one (the red) might be Scarlet (#FC2847).

*Following*

I heard this is where all the old timers are posting. *waves to fairyqueen and drizjr*

Still catching up but will chime in soon.

I'm not sure if I should be offended or relieved that I may or may not be considered an 'old timer.'

Be neither, my friend. You simply had not posted anything in the first page of this thread. Was glad to see your squiggly eyed avatar once again.

Speaking of eyes, the object that's just below your eyes is your nose. Perhaps a method of encryption that deals with or perhaps has the word nose in it?

Also, do you think RU meant "deduce" or did he really mean "deduct" when he said "...you must deduct HOW this msg is encrypted before I will proceed."? That sentence takes on a much different meaning depending on the actual intended word.

below your eyes or blow your nose

Warm greetings to you, Vapor. It's fun to realizes that old timers hold such attraction. Wink

MrToasty... In all these years, I have never stared at your avatar so perplexed.
Then I noticed that RU typed a period to begin his/her reply to you (at first glance, it looks like part of RU's profile pic). And, lo and behold, right there... below MrToasty's eyes, is also a dot!

link or see attached.

There's a cute play on words, too. In most cases, dots are above the i's.

My comb may be painfully fine-toothed as I wondered if the focus is on the "I". "HOW <snip> before I <snip>" lead me to learn about a quote often mistakenly attributed to Poe; "Sleep, those little slices of death; oh how I loath them."

I've no idea what it means; just adding to the collective.

Ah, the hypno-donkey ensnares another victim... Smile

Using the period before the @ is likely just a twitter trick. If the tweet began with the @ then potentially only those that follow both of us would see the tweet. With the dot first, anyone following just ruartist would see it as well.

If colour is the 'key' and we are taking the crayola colours to be the source text then maybe we should link colours.

If the ciphertext is Lavender

Lavender FCB4D5 252,180,213

Then the plaintext is one of

Yellow FCE883 252,232,131
Yellow Green C5E384 197,227,132
Yellow Orange FFB653 255,182,83

But I can't find a connection. Mr Toasty's background is also yellow.

Did the little brain BB finally fall in the proper slot?

After reading the above posts re: Mr Toasty's nose-

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Period= periodic table? With some tinkering the colors can fit into the first 1-26 on the period table. (Scarlet for Red etc.) Got garbage so far, and I've got to go on errands, but the ideal could have merit?

ETA- drizjr I've extensively used and enjoyed your most excellent spreadsheet!

Haven't had time to test the theory, but I believe if you use substition on the hex values (rather than color names) we may come to the same answer MrToasty came to with the cryptogram solve. I'd probably start with ROT13 and see if you can get the hex values for the letters in the first line "BEGINAGAIN" to match hex values in "YOUWILLMEETHERBYTHESEA". Esentially, find a method the consistantly converts hex values corresponding to the letters "A", "B", "E", and "I" in the first line to hex values (and subsequently colors) of the same letters in the second line. If there's a match, use the same substitution method on the rest of the hex values in the second line to come to "YOUWILLMEETHERBYTHESEA".

ETA - ROT13 works only on letters, so unless only the alphabetic values are encrypted, it can be ruled out. RuArtists last tweet "...not color names, but ----" makes me think I might be on the right track, though.

Just going to put this here to come back to later. It's all the letters from the last puzzle which also appear in previous puzzles.

Code:
A --> 87A96B --> EE204D --> Asparagus --> Red
B --> FF7F49 --> DBD7D2 --> Burnt Orange --> Timberwolf
E --> 6E5160 --> 71BC78 --> Eggplant --> Fern
I --> 5D76CB --> 87A96B --> Indigo --> Asparagus
M --> FDBCB4 --> 6E5160 --> Melon --> Eggplant
O --> 414A4C --> 158078 --> Outer Space --> Pine Green
R --> 7851A9 --> 1DACD6 --> Royal Purple --> Cerulean
S --> FD5E53 --> FDBCB4 --> Sunset Orange --> Melon
T --> DBD7D2 --> FD5E53 --> Timberwolf --> Sunset Orange
Y --> C5E384 --> FCB4D5 --> Yellow Green --> Lavender

All the hex laid out in one string

Code:
FCB4D5158078414A4C5D76CB87A96BFC6C85FC6C856E516071BC7871BC78FD5E53FFA08971BC781DACD6DBD7D2FCB4D5FD5E53FFA08971BC78FDBCB471BC78EE204D

And also laid out i9n a 12 x 11 grid

Code:
FCB4D5158078
414A4C5D76CB
87A96BFC6C85
FC6C856E5160
71BC7871BC78
