We're going to need details about what it is exactly they're trying to "block" you from, and how

This has little to no relevency to the rest of us and a lot of us didn't want your film anyway. Your claims of your project being fueled by the community are greatly exaggerated.

You're on your own, as far as I'm concerned. They can't harm the independent projects that actually make up the mythos and that's all that matters to most of us.

I read somewhere that Victor Surge had copyrighted the 'slender man' name, but you could get around it by using different titles - ie, MH using The Operator for example.

I may be wrong on that, but I know I read it somewhere.

I'll admit, I'm curious why you're being targetted legally when there are so many ARGs and other forms of fiction using the slender man likeness that are, presumably, not coming up against the same problem.

In that case, I'm sure there are many games, images, films, stories, etc. that others didn't want... but it's each and every creator's right to make whatever they want. This goes beyond just our film, it's the principle. You can either choose to support or not support our project, but that doesn't mean these self-proclaimed "owners" should have the right to do this to anyone. It's not just about us.

We are fully willing to cooperate within reason, but we're not willing to stand by and let this happen to us or others to the extent these people see fit. Whether you choose to "like" us or not, we care about the Mythos and the right for anyone to contribute to it very very much. Unlike our enemies, this isn't about a profit. But choose what you want to believe, after all, that is your right... which is what all of this is about.

Thanks

I understand why you all wouldn't support this right away, but I'd suggest doing so. I realize that many of us do not like the idea of a Slender Man movie. (However, MH is making one that will be bigger, so that point is a bit pointless.)

However, it is the principle that matters. If this movie is stopped with legal intervention, then it will set a precedent that will be difficult to destroy, and one that will influence the Slenderverse for times to come. Do I need to explain how a hanging copyright threat would be an issue?

And Clairabel, I have the same question you do.

Here's the thing:

Marble Hornets never states "Slender Man". It's the Operator. And you can't tell me that MH didn't set the many tropes that SM films and videos follow.

TribeTwelve? Also not "slender man". Never once mentioned.

Even in my former vlog, never called him slenderman. The Tall Guy, The tall man, Keninwayhee, Sonyakope. Plenty of names to use.

Which is why I said I was pretty sure that Surge had protected/copyrighted the slender man name, but:

Quote:
The letter states, "The use of the SlenderMan character".

Surely if it was a problem of using the name, that is what the letter would explicitly state?

(and I hear you about the different names, my written fiction is going with Fear Dubh, Celtic mythology for the win.)

You're not being helpful, Envoy. You know better.

As for Mr. Belcher, what I've got to say is that you're in a legal bind. You don't own the name "Slenderman", nor the character archetype. If it goes to court, you're going to have to prove that you're not infringing upon Victor Surge's copyright.

My personal opinion is that he shouldn't even have that copyright, given that he created and abandoned the character four years ago now, but "shouldn't" doesn't mean "doesn't".

Apparently the character is in the public domain, but the name isn't.

However, I agree with you. He shouldn't have that copyright.
