The Reveal Going public I'm not close to releasing it yet, but I am working on 2 ARGs, and I'm currently working on ways to "reveal" the games, ie. make them public.
I'm running into two problems in my planning:
1) Way's to reveal without being too obvious (e.x. Post on unforums "Hey! Check out this site! I wonder what it's about..."
2) But I need the reveal to reach a wide audience. (e.x. I can't just put a site out there and hope people would find it).
Does anybody have suggestions/examples of good ways to "reveal" an ARG?

Suggestions for Wide Audience Reveal YouTube seems popular these days.
MySpace (*konamouse* sticks her finger down her throat and makes choaking noises) is also popular.
Posting on forums populated by your target audience?
Free advertisements in Craig's List?
Just a few that popped into my head.

Recently, Yahoo Answers has been used as a Rabbithole Delivery Model™ (RDM).
Ha ha, I just trademarked a new term, and I have no legal authority to do so! Nyah nyah!

Posters placed in high traffic areas in the towns where you live.
If you have the money, a cheap, but memorable ad. (How many people joined WIBS just because of Virgil the coconut man? Not that most people have the money for that particular ad buy-in, but you could still come up with something catchy. Didn't metacortechs start with just a random google ad?)
Cryptic tshirts with urls on them that you can walk around town in.
Appropriate packages sent to random addresses collected from the net. Like, if your ARG was about ferrets, you could send me something ferrety because my website mentions ferrets. Or, if it was about brunettes, you could send something to strifey because of the SPC . Or if it's about aliens, find a good alien website and the the webmaster pieces of alien junk to analyze.
Stick hidden messages inside books at a library/bookstore.
Hide homemade cds in used record shops. Fill them full of cryptic goodness.
Find out if there is going to be a national media presense in your town. Make a big sign. Get on tv.
Attend a dog show with a cat. Or vice versa. Make sure you shave your website into the fur of your animal so that people will know where to go to complain. But don't use ferrets. They are too small to put a long url on.

You certainly could! Remember that your goal isn't to make sure every player finds it, but that a few KEY people find it, then pass the word along. If your site is mysterious enough, it becomes a meme on its own, generating its own buzz. Or if you drop the URL into a place where it will spread, be patient and LET it spread.

This could be debated. Do you need the rabbithole to be found by everyone simultaneously, or just the trailhead? Sure you want the game to be found by a wide audience, but they need not all find out about it on the same day, if you build in some ramp up time into the first part of the game.
(p.s. don't launch both games at once! Am i the only one worried that you are developing two games at the same time?)

I've been wondering this myself: for mailing a rabbithole, how anonymous can the source be? Isn't there a way to track the package itself, based on the stamps and markings?
You don't need to put a return address on, no, but how would one be able to send a fully anonymous package? (or at least sufficiently anonymous that a layperson wouldn't know easily)

Well, when sending my young cousin a copy of a book, I put her address as the return address, and a fictional address for the to address, then mailed it.
Since the to address was nonexistent, it got "returned" to my cousin.

No wonder our postal service charges have gone up!
"Return to Sender" is dicey if it's something expensive. Was there any handling charge?

Nope.
I sent it media mail, though, so we're only talking $2.something in postage. It took longer for her to get it, obviously.

Have lots of friends? Advertise via some sort of Improv Everywhere type event that is in some way related to the plot of your ARG. Anonymously let a local news channel know.
If you don't have lots of friends, do what the Improv Everywhere guys do, put out an ad (classifieds, Craigslist, etc.) that says "Show up here at this time. Bring a blue shirt, some rope, and magic markers".
Just a thought.

But there was still a postmark showing your original city. Correct?
Isn't there some place you can send to have mail forwarded from there. (Make it look like it was originally sent from there.)?
Like the "North pole" postmark the Post Office used to put on letters from Santa if you asked them.

Often, if one encloses an envelope inside of an envelope, and sends it care of the Postmaster for a particular city, they will postmark it for their city and send it along, provided you have attached the appropriate postage.
lots of cutesy engaged couples like to do this when they send out wedding invites - they'll find a town named Love, or Forever, or Shnookums Poopsie Woopsie, and send correspondence there, asking for a handstamp, so it's nice and clear.

There are companies that will do this for you for the right price. And since I was bored today, I found that price to be around $2-$3 a pop (plus postage).
A town named Love? If I could find a street name Chris there, I'd be in business!
