Book Thing

OK, so this book thing is probably going to happen. Here's a link to a timeline yanka did, reply if you see a category you'd like to work on.

The link in the preceeding paragraph will be updated as people start checking their names next to boxes, so don't bookmark the page because it might not be in one place for long.

OK, here's what I can do (some of these won't need much at all):

Oct. 10 Leiphe and Dr. Kane sites go live (Me and Monki were right there for these updates - I spent quite a bit of time cataloguing Kane's quotes on his homepage)
Oct 10 Wongmo goes live; /wongmore (Unless Monki wants this one)
Oct. 31 Halloween phonecall; glitch on Metacortechs site (I want to at least write something on cleaning up and demodulating the "odd/inaudible sections". And I saw the glitch on the site - someone else probably went more in-depth into the site than I did, tho)
Nov 6 MLO uploads the pictures and tapestry to his Metadex (I will definitely talk about the tapestry, w/ the help of yeahyeah and xnbomb - I could also mention the pictures somewhat, though I pretty much ignored those during the game)
Nov. 6 Wongmo's contest winners: chancesend, ReMont, joebrent, Allan Eising, (I was only an honorable mention, so it'd probably be best for one of the actual t-shirt/mug winners to do this - but I will if no one else wants to)
Nov 16 Brutus files (I believe this was the one I solved first, but others would have a better handle on writing about how this part of the hacker story fits into the big picture)

Sadly due to timezones, I wasn't there for a lot of it. I have a couple of annecdotes, but I'll pass them on to the relevant person once assigned.

So how far is this going? When people are talking about a book, is this an easy read version of events for download or a real paper and ink (and publishers fees) deal?

Of course you'll nead a title and a cover (Oct 1st?)

And it would be nice to have a full mirror set of the sites for reference - CD slipped in the back if it's a real book?

I hope the PMs will make extra material available (Flash source is better than decompiled flash Wink )

On the whole, I hope this works out, if only to give to the people who kept asking "So what is it all about?", "So what's in it for you?", "Don't you think you need to get some sleep?" etc. Very Happy

Oh, another thing?

I hope this will be a chronological account of events with the solutions where they happened rather than with the puzzles.

I think it would spoil it to have shortcuts such as "On xxx we discovered a new puzzle which wasn't solved until yyy (see page z)"

Hopefully to add a bit of suspense to the reader, who will get to the end (as we did) not understanding what the Oct 1st Pic meant Laughing

Also Has any thought been given to the writing style? - proably good to establish this first;

Like a novel - "the board was quiet, a few sparse entries indicated the level of frustration as players disected every piece of the picture looking for that elusive clue"

A series of diary entries - "September 15th, 11pm - Logged on as usual, half expecting the solution to be waiting only to see..."

Freeform (everybody telling it in their own words) - "Yeah, It was nasty, I was propper miffed until this star on IRC found a wicked clue"

Ok, so yanka finally finished her "secret project" eh? Smile

There are lots of subjects I'd like to write on, to name my favorites:

- OCT1 October 1 picture (first Sapagoo's solve, then lots of people doubting it, then Sapagoo explaining, then frustration as to the rest of the picture)
- OCT2 Little-boxes #28 (numerous tries to 'solve' the text)
- ONGOING MLO's password (the pain, the horror Very Happy )
- OCT10/OCT11 The MC meet-and-greet and Beth get's caught (major storyline, and also a huge build-up of expectation for most players)
- NOV20 Schuffhausen find (frantic figuring out of more phonenumbers, staring at IP registration info, etc.)
- NOV24 FAQ url
- Noble/Roman files

There are lots more I'd like to do if noone else picks them up, but I'll leave it to these for now Smile

Binary

I am pretty sure I provided a link to the Binary to Ascii converter here. http://nickciske.com/tools/binary.php

I had used it before I got on to this game. My wife and I would send silly messages back and forth and decode them.

After I posted it, I know the site had some problems and/or crashed.

I just can't find my post.

I would absolutely love to write up that last Dina hint solve, unless Yanka wants to do it. Oh, and unless Moriar wants to describe his find of the actual page, since that rocked so much. It's ridiculous how much fun that was...

"Krystyn, we don't get it!"
"Ok, well, here, let me give you tons of hints..."
"Krystyn, we still don't get it!"
"Ok, well, let me basically tell you what the solution is..."
"Krystyn, we still don't....oh, there it is. Cool."

Oh, and Random. I would gladly write about Random...hee.

Oh, and I was just thinking, could we incorporate the actual pages and files into this? That would make it awesome to read. Like, "Then we looked at this update, and saw that this picture clearly had a face in it" *insert picture and maybe zoom in and highlight what you're talking about* "and then everyone told me I was hallucinating..."

I noticed a lack of that sort of thing in guides to other games...don't make the readers search through the archived sites to see what we're talking about. As few outside links as possible...if we incorporate everything into the page, it would make the text much easier to follow. Also, it's just more fun reading things with pictures. Mr. Green

Lol! Omnie, of course, you write about it - and plz make sure it's just as hilarious. Moriar can add to that, if he wants.

I'm going to update the timeline thing to reflect these last additions; also, I think that it is ok if more than one person writes about the same thing - and that that should be done in a lot of cases, as in:
Person1: I have tried MLO's birthday in 29 different formats - none of those is his password
Person2: I have tried his Zodiac sign; then I tried all the other Zodiac signs for good measure
Person3: I tried a bunch of Greek words/names that had anything to do with Labyrinth or Minotaur
Person4: I have memorized the lyrics to "When I'm 64", and none of the words from there are the password
Person5: I have memorized the lyrics of all the songs on that album, and none of those are his password; and now I'm also able to identify every person on the album's cover - but no password yet
LokiNZ: uhhh... not sure what the big deal here is... I just tried "MLO" in base 64, and it worked Rolling Eyes

I think it's a great idea; it might be somewhat of a problem in the beginning because of hosting issues, but in the final version having pictures in the body of the book should make it a lot more readable.
