Greetings

As the other recent additions, I've solved the cipher in the Guardian tonite. I look forward to working with you all on this 'game'.

Hello All,

Like some of the others I came across this pre-game by the looking for a job and seeing the intriguing advert in the Guardian on Monday. I solved that cipher and then purchased MW and solved the Casear cipher. However the MD5 hash stumped me, so congrats to those that used a brute force approach and got the solution.

Being a newbie to ARG I just wanted to post a Hello to you all in this forum and will look forward to working with you on the Game. Thanks.

Devilman...

Hi

Got here via marketing week...pleased to be with you. Have to say, a quick scan through 10 pages late at night tells me I know very little about codebreaking...

Don't worry, you'll learn quick around here Smile

I'm noticing an alarming amount of people who were looking for jobs when they came across an ad in The Guardian, which brought them (inexorably!) here. This concerns me. Surely, the PM's realize an ARG is one of the most addictive forms of entertainment known to man. This is the LAST thing an unemployed person needs to get involved with! I hope your unemployment system is good over there in The UK, 'cause you'll need every bit of it once this game gets into gear.

*Sigh*

Yes, another Guardian reader here playing catch-up. I actually thought about applying for a job with them until I found this place, and started to wonder whether I was really up to it after all. Still, I'm glad someone got to Marketing Week and I didn't have to wander all the way down to the library.

Suggest you read The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography
by Simon Singh

Got me through the simple substitution and Ceasar cyphers. And it's got the crossword used to recruit codebreakers for Bletchley - I used it in a pub quiz recently - upset the punters a bit: tipstaff? sennight?

Hello - mind if I watch for a while? I won't clog you up any further, but if I have an insight, I'll throw it in.

My thoughts precisely.

Just wanted to drop a note saying that I'm here, I found a scanned image of the ad from the London Guardian, solved the cryptogram, did some hunting, and landed here.

And yeah, I may just play the game instead of ever trying to work for the guys.

Or maybe I'll just watch you guys play, I'd probably be just as useful that way. Wink

Thanks for the tips, guys. Likewise, not sure if I'd be up to a job, on the other hand it took us all about 48 hours to get as clued up as anyone else - admittedly by cribbing off of everyone else on here Very Happy

Another one...

I'm another Guardian/MW day tripper - Hello everyone!

I was just wondering how many people here are planning to apply for a job with these guys? What's your background and why do you think you'll get in? And whether you have any cunning ways of making them more likely to employ you...?!!

I'm just interested!

Thanks!

Fluffy

As an "old timer" to this forum and genre, I just wanted to say welcome to all the new folks. Don't be afraid to jump right in and participate---we were all newbies once, and it has been our repeated experience that those with fresh eyes can contribute to any game, sometimes solving some puzzle that has stumped all the seasoned players for a long time!

You're in the right place, enjoy!!

Cool

Just another question...

For all us newbies to ARG's, what do you think are the best resources for learning about the genre (this site excepted obviously!). Also, which of the games running atm is the best? I'm thinking of getting involved with one to learn more... Only problem is, like most of us who've turned up here in the last week, I'm unemployed... And it's hard enough to keep up the motivation for the endless rejection party, so getting completely absorbed in a game could be very dangerous indeed!

Thanks,

Fluffy

Outside of the numerous tutorials, commentaries, and dark tips shocased on these forums, there are a few other sites I can personally endorse as helping be stay abreast of the goings-on in the ARG world (as virtual as it may be):

Deadrop.us has some of the most insightful, interesting articles I've read about Alternate Reality Gaming. Bill Shaw is a ARG Deity, and whether he's writing the article or someone else is chiming in, the issues discussed and solutions offered are top notch.

Cloudmakers and the Cloudmaker Yahoo Group is where a lot of our little universe was created. The .org site is great for showing how an ARG can be catalogued, poked, prodded and preened, while reading through the Yahoo board (yes, all 36000 entries are daunting) can give you a sense of how the Beast unfolded and at what rate.

ARGN is a great site for highlighting games as they become less of a rumor and more of a reality, and is a neat place to see Steve's archive of articles dedicated to ARG. Also, check out the ARG graveyard there and see some of what you may have missed in years gone by. Oh, and the forums (short lived as they were) rocked when they were alive and kicking.

Varin's Site, while not dedicated to all things ARG (love her Blog style though) is the meeting place for Puppetmasters in training (check out her forums for more details).

When I have more time, I will be sure to append this entry.
