still disturbed...

I'm just at the point of putting in a job application, after all it was the reason to decode the ad, as I thought there was the faint possibility of a job at the end of it. I wanted the puzzles they set to be done, so as not to appear a complete arse.

Thanks to all those who answered my stupid questions.
Thanks to those who solved the hash function, that was well beyond my cryptography skills.

I'm still slightly disturbed. I think there is a package somewhere to be found. Why the hell would you put a photo of a box (for containing chemicals or biohazardous materials) on the webpage, with a flight tag, unless it was meant to be looked at and puzzled over. Then there was danhon's reference to asomething missed:

<AdrianHon> Look guys, there is something you have missed
<AdrianHon> In fact, two things you have missed
<AdrianHon> But no doubt you will find them eventually
<AdrianHon> One of them you have already seen, but brushed over
<AdrianHon> The other one is really obvious when you find it though
<AdrianHon> Direction. Alison. That's all I'm saying.

Ho hum.

There's still the logo and the picture on the front page of the site unidentified.... I thought the picture might be of the multimedia corridor in the film disclosure, i'm not so sure now.

I can accept that the logo may be of project syzygy. But the picture is still a mystery..... Also what the hell does that question mark do? It selects but does nothing...

It continues to niggle.

Am I stating something fairly obvious? Double-clicking on the question mark seems to toggle the music on and off. May be nothing more to it than that - but I'm happy to stand corrected if anyone else has divined deeper....

Stick around, should be very exciting when the action kicks in.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to check in and say hello. I'm been ARGing since the Beast, but I'm been out of the loop for the past year or so. I'm glad to be getting back in just as the hype for this game starts building up. So yeah, that's about all I've got to say.....i'm sure I'll be talking with everyone sooner or later....

Hi another intrigued ignorant following the trail from the guardian here. Suddenly a whole new world has appeared, and I already feel like I've learned a few new things. Hope can be of assistance at some point, otherwise will just look on in interest and awe.

By the way how did (grumpyboy??) get the dinah part of the md5# code? Did he run a library of names through md5 and compare output or ??? Is that a 'brute force' method?

Cheers,
S.

Yes, he did. He was running a modified brute force/dictionary attack, a hybrid attack, using John the Ripper. It is similar to brute force, while not being a textbook definition. The reason it was acceptable in this case is because the PMs obviously intended for it to be solved this way (md5 is one way), and because it was off line. The reason brute force is frowned upon is because it usualy sucks up bandwith and processing time from the server. When it's done localy, it is usualy (but not always) acceptable.

Webmail

Probably have to pass this one by the ethics committee, but a little bird showed me the way to project syzygy's webmail account. If anyone wants to try and read sente's mail, you could give it a go.

You could try and hack into the webmail accounts...

... but I don't think it's a particularly good idea.

I know a few of you were around when Microsoft came out with the Beast (http://cloudmakers.org/) and there was a similar debate about whether or not players should hack into that game's servers and ransack the content. The moderators -- and I'm one of them -- came down hard and unequivocally on that issue: it wasn't something we would ever tolerate.

Let me try and explain it like this: the ARG experience is about taking part in a story. It's one of the best forms of entertainment that humankind has come up with. It's about completely immersing yourself in a world, letting it surround you and pick you up, carry you to places that you could never, ever dream of.

Hacking in to a game server is like flicking to the last page of a book. It's not being able to contain yourself and *definitely* not wanting to go through the whole point of the experience. It's the journey that's valuable, not the end.

Then again, what if you did manage to get in to the webmail accounts? Do you want to see this die before you even get to play it?

I don't think so. It'd be a crying shame.

I assure you this: when you're meant to hack in to something, you'll know.

This isn't one of those times.

If you want to support the genre, then you'll know what to do with this information. If you want to help kill it, well, on your head be it. I'm sure I won't be the only one who's disappointed.

Remember when you find a site, hacking shouldn't be the first thing to jump to your mind. We know the game is not properly starting to Q4 and breaking into anyone's email won't make the game arrive quicker or make it any better.

In fact, the only thing which could come from it is the game being delayed ... or worse. Now I'm pretty sure there is no one here who wants that.

When most ARGs are run - if we're supposed to "hack" in - then they'll be using custom scripts. It's very unlikely that they'll use a well known webmail script as any part of a hacking attempt. It's the same as if they used Movable Type on the site, it doesn't mean you should go and attempt to hack into the admin.

Just remember, there's always rules.

I actually agree with everything said by Danhon, but to me this was the most salient point. We have a burgeoning genre here, and I'd hate to see it die a premature death. I'm relatively new to this, but to me it's the best form of entertainment there is - it makes me think as well as entertaining me. To all the new players (and you're very welcome, I'm saying this as someone who was welcomed into the community with open arms about 6 months ago), take a minute to get familiar with the informal rules of this type of gaming. As Danhon said, when you're meant to hack it, you'll know. Please don't hack stuff just 'cos you can.
